GSM phones vulnerable to hijack scams: researcher (Reuters)

BERLIN (Reuters) ? Flaws in a widely used wireless technology could allow hackers to gain remote control of phones and instruct them to send text messages or make calls, according to an expert on mobile phone security.

They could use the vulnerability in the GSM technology -- which is used by most telecom operators globally and by billions of people -- to make calls or send texts to expensive, premium phone and messaging services in scams, said Karsten Nohl, head of Berlin-based Security Research Labs.

Nohl is a well-regarded expert on mobile security who last year identified a bug in GSM technology that makes calls vulnerable to tapping. He says he is calling attention to these flaws to pressure the industry into beefing up the security of their products.

Mobile security is a hot issue because hackers are paying unprecedented attention to the devices as smartphone sales have outpaced sales of PCs.

Only a few flaws have been found in GSM technology - which stands for Global System for Mobile Communications - over its 20-year history. Industry lobby group GSMA said on Tuesday it did not expect the new findings to affect its views on the security of the technology.

"The GSMA and its mobile network operator members are confident in the security of existing 2G GSM networks and real attacks on real networks against real customers are most unlikely," it said in a statement, adding that newer technologies are safer and not impacted by the new research.

GSMA's statement "on anticipated GSM security announcements" did not make clear whether the industry group had actually seen Nohl's latest research.

Security experts have previously identified a small number of viruses designed to infect smartphones, allowing hackers to take control of the devices and force them to make calls or send text messages. But Nohl said he has discovered a way to leverage previously disclosed vulnerabilities in GSM technology that could potentially threaten hundreds of thousands of phones.

"We can do it to hundreds of thousands of phones in a short time frame," Nohl told Reuters ahead of a presentation on the topic at a hacking convention in Berlin on Tuesday.

SECTOR IN FOCUS

Smartphone malware is popping up at an unprecedented rate as people put more and more valuable information on the devices, using them to hold corporate secrets, conduct banking and function as digital wallets.

GSM became the dominant mobile technology globally in the late 1990s and even though new, faster mobile networks have been rolled out across the world, operators have stuck to their GSM networks to support older phones and to offer service when new networks fail.

The Berlin convention takes place just days after U.S. security think tank Strategic Forecasting Inc (Stratfor) said its website had been hacked and that some names of corporate subscribers had been made public. Activist hacker group Anonymous claimed responsibility.

Attacks on corporate landline phone systems are fairly common, often involving bogus premium-service phone lines that hackers set up in countries in Eastern Europe, Africa and Asia.

Fraudsters make calls to the numbers from hacked business phone systems or mobile phones, then collect their cash and move on before the activity is identified.

The phone users typically do not realize the problem until after they receive their bills, and telecommunications carriers often end up footing at least some of the costs.

Even though Nohl will not present all details of possible attacks at the conference, he said hackers will usually replicate the code needed for attacks within a few weeks.

T-MOBILE, SFR LEAD NEW RANKING

Mobile networks of Germany's T-Mobile and France's SFR offer their clients the best protection against online criminals wanting to intercept their calls or track their movements, according to a new ranking Nohl will unveil at his presentation.

The new ranking, at gsmmap.org, is conducted by security researchers, who hope this will heighten the awareness of operators and consumers on the vulnerability of their mobile communications.

Researchers reviewed 32 operators in 11 countries and rated their performance based on how easy it was for them to intercept the calls, impersonate someone's device or track the device.

"None of the networks protects users very well," Nohl said.

The sample is set to grow from 32 carriers dramatically next year as the tool enables anyone to participate in data gathering

by downloading measuring software to their phones.

Nohl said mobile telecom operators could easily improve their clients' security, in many cases by just updating their software.

Researchers reviewed operators in Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Morocco, Slovakia, Switzerland and Thailand.

Phishing email seeks Apple billing info

By Suzanne Choney

You won't get an email from Apple asking you to update your billing information. But if you think you got one in recent days, delete it; it's a phishing scam designed to snatch that info from you, and it's definitely not from the Cupertino company.

The "vast phishing attack," as Mac software security firm Intego calls it, began around Christmas Day, and seeks to prey on those who got new Apple gear for the holiday. The spammers don't know whether you did or not; they do know that with Apple products as popular as they were on holiday gift lists, the odds are in their favor of getting some hits on this.

The email's subject line is "Apple update your Billing Information." Says Intego: "These well-crafted emails could fool many new Apple users, especially those who may have found an iPhone, iPod or iMac under their Christmas tree, and set up accounts with the iTunes Store or the Mac App Store for the first time. The messages claim to come from 'appleid@id.apple.com.'" And here's what it says:

Intego

Looks official, right?

Intego says if you click on the link in the message, you'd be taken to a "realistic-looking sign-in page, then, after entering your Apple ID and password, you?ll be taken to a page asking you to update your account profile, notably entering your credit card information. Again, this page looks realistic, and many of the elements it contains are taken from Apple's own Web pages."

But if you moved your cursor over the link in the message and waited for a "tooltip to pop up," you'd see this:

Intego

The URL that's shown is not an apple.com address, Intego says, "but rather a numerical address (we've blurred the first part of the address). At the end of the address is a page called apple.htm, which could fool people, but that?s not what?s important. Always look at the part right after the http:// in the URL: if it's not something.apple.com (it could be www.apple.com, store.apple.com, or something else), then it's bogus."

Thanks to Intego for the heads-up and the reminder that phishing scams may be at their worst during the holidays, but can also proliferate after them, too.

Animal Health Insurance

Pet health insurance was virtually unheard of until around 20 years ago when certain types of animal insurance were introduced to pet owners. Coverage for pets has been a growing interest among animal owners because of the rising veterinary costs. Animal health insurance is also a growing concern for more and more pet owners who treat their pets with humane care and personal affection. For the most part, the medical costs and maintenance costs for animal care has come out of the pockets of pet owners, giving rise to recent demands for some kind of coverage.

Veterinarian costs for treating illnesses, providing annual checkups and treating emergency situations in pets is rising sharply and many companies are designing special packages. Pet health insurance is very similar in coverage to human coverage in regards to coverage and choices for policies. There are policies that can be purchased that cover annual check-ups, general heartworm treatments and other basic maintenance for animals. It is surprising the amount of money that can be spent yearly through typical animal health insurance and this type of package can offer financial assistance to owners. Anyone who is a dog owner knows how they like to get morsels from their humans' table. Even the scriptures mention this, and remind us to keep our priorities straight. "But Jesus said unto her, Let the children first be filled: for it is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it unto the dogs." (Mark 7:27)

Other types of animal health insurance are available such as emergency care or diagnostic care and treatment of serious illnesses. Pet health insurance packages can be purchased that will cover a pet's well being for several years as stipulated by certain policies. Some policies will cover those animals that have pre-existing illnesses or health concerns, and other policies can only be purchased for pets that are healthy and have a normal life expectancy. A policy can be purchased with varying deductibles depending on an owner's choice. The higher the deductible the lower the premiums are available for these policies just as any other type of insurance.

Plans for vaccinations, spaying or neutering or other common issues are some of the options included for animal health insurance. Pet health insurance costs depend on a variety of factors such as the type of package, what type of animal to be covered, and the deductible chosen. An owner can check with his vet or with several online companies for more information regarding coverage and quotes.

Mexico drug 'security chief' held

Mexican authorities have captured Felipe Cabrera Sarabia, the alleged security chief for the boss of the Sinaloa drug cartel.

Troops arrested Mr Cabrera in Culiacan, capital of Sinaloa state, defence officials said.

Army special forces also seized documents and computer equipment, AP reports.

More than 40,000 people have been killed in drug-related violence in Mexico since December 2006.

Since then, the government of President Felipe Calderon has been deploying the military to fight the gangs.

Mr Cabrera, known as "the Engineer", was brought before the news media wearing a bulletproof vest at a press conference in Mexico City on Monday.

His capture "will affect the structure and leadership of the Sinaloa cartel", said army spokesman Gen Ricardo Trevilla, according to AP.

Mr Cabrera is believed by defence officials to have run operations for the Sinaloa cartel in the northern state of Durango and in part of the northern state of Chihuahua, as well as being head of security for the cartel's boss, Joaquin Guzman.

Guzman is thought to be a billionaire and has been on the run from authorities since escaping from prison in 2001.

The US authorities have placed a $5m (?3.25m) bounty on Guzman's head, alleging that he and his cartel control most of the cocaine and marijuana trafficked into the US from Mexico and Colombia.

Meanwhile, Mexican troops have discovered 13 bodies in an abandoned truck in the north-eastern state of Tamaulipas.

The area has seen violence between the Gulf and Zetas cartels, and messages alluding to the rivalry were found in the truck, justice officials said.

The murders are believed to be linked to a similar discovery last Friday in neighbouring Veracruz state.

On Thursday, various attacks on buses and on people in the town of El Higo in Veracruz left 11 dead.

Economic inequality an issue for US 2012 campaign

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Fighting to win over unhappy American voters, President Barack Obama and his Republican challengers are seizing on one of the most potent issues this election season: the struggling middle class and the widening gap between rich and poor.

Highlighted by the Occupy movement and fanned by record profits on Wall Street at a time of stubborn unemployment, economic inequality is now taking center stage in the 2012 presidential campaign, emphasized by Obama and offering opportunities and risks for him and his GOP opponents as both sides battle for the allegiance of the angst-ridden electorate.

For Obama, who calls boosting middle-class opportunity "the defining issue of our time," the question is whether he can bring voters along ? while parrying GOP accusations of class warfare ? even though he's failed to solve the country's economic woes during his first term in office.

For Republicans, Obama's potential vulnerability gives them an opening, but they also must battle perceptions that their policies favor the wealthy at a time when voters support Obama's call to raise taxes on the very rich. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has already made clear he'll resist Obama's attempts to capitalize on the issue, adopting the language of Occupy Wall Street in an interview with the Washington Post this month where he called the president "a member of the 1 percent."

For both sides, the question is how to find political advantage in light of a weak economy with unemployment above 8 percent. Since Obama is expected to run for re-election with higher unemployment than any recent president even if the economy continues to show signs of improvement, he must aim to set the terms of the debate in a way that helps him and hurts the GOP ? while Republicans will be working just as hard to deny him any advantage.

The president won a year-end victory Friday with the passage of a two-month extension of a payroll tax cut that had bipartisan support in the Senate.

The measure will keep in place a 2 percentage point cut in the Social Security payroll tax ? worth about $20 a week for a typical worker making $50,000 (?38,293) a year ? and prevent almost 2 million unemployed people from losing jobless benefits averaging $300 a week.

House Republicans had unsuccessfully attempted to push for further negotiations toward a yearlong extension, which allowed Obama to argue for the two-month extension of the tax cuts and prevention of a pending tax increase. The two sides resume discussions on the payroll tax cut early next year.

Obama's campaign pressed its economic argument Friday in an op-ed by Vice President Joe Biden in The Des Moines Register where Biden, taking direct aim at Romney, wrote that the former Massachusetts governor "would actually double down on the policies that caused the greatest economic calamity since the Great Depression and accelerated a decades-long assault on the middle class."

Romney, campaigning in New Hampshire, quickly countered that it's Obama who is hurting the country and expressed astonishment that Biden would have the "chutzpah ... the delusion" to write such a piece. "This president and his policies have made it harder on the American people and on the middle class," Romney said.

It was a preview of an argument certain to carry through the 2012 race, as the Obama campaign, viewing Romney as the likely GOP nominee even before any votes have been cast, works vigorously to define him early on, and Romney does everything he can to resist.

And the dispute taps into a striking reality. After-tax income grew by 275 percent between 1979 and 2007 for the top 1 percent of the population, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office found in a report this fall. But for the 20 percent of the population making the least money, income growth over the same period was only 18 percent.

Obama "is viewed as more likely to help the middle class than is the GOP, so he can capitalize on this by playing on concerns about inequality and contrasting his positions and the GOP's on issues like tax cuts for the wealthy," John Sides, political science professor at George Washington University, said by email. "However," Sides added, "it's an open question whether that strategy would enable him to overcome a weak economy and win."

Aides say Obama has long been concerned with economic inequality given his background in community organizing. But he brought the issue into much sharper focus in a speech in Osawatomie, Kan., earlier this month, where he reprised a populist message delivered in the same town by Theodore Roosevelt decades ago, and decried a growing inequality between chief executives and their workers.

"This kind of inequality ? a level that we haven't seen since the Great Depression ? hurts us all," Obama said at the time.

"This kind of gaping inequality gives lie to the promise that's at the very heart of America: that this is a place where you can make it if you try."

The issue has become a rallying cry of the Occupy Wall Street movement that's swept the country, with activists proclaiming "We are the 99 percent" ? as opposed to the "1 percent" at the top. And Obama advisers have identified this sense of inequality as the strongest current running through politics, one that they will be focusing on through Election Day.

But some polling suggests a note of caution for Obama in pressing the inequality argument. Gallup found this month that a majority of Americans don't view the country as divided into haves and have-nots. The polling also found that more people thought it was important for the government to focus on growing and expanding the economy, (82 percent) and increasing equality of opportunity (70 percent) than on reducing the income and wealth gap between the rich and poor (46 percent).

"The middle class certainly believes that it's in trouble and rightly so, because it is," said Bill Galston, a former Clinton administration domestic policy adviser now at the Brookings Institution. "But they are yet to be convinced that going after the rich will go to the heart of the problems that now afflict them."

That may suggest an opening for some GOP attacks against Obama. Romney charged in a speech in New Hampshire this month that Obama is pursuing an "entitlement society," versus the "opportunity society" that the former Massachusetts governor said he wants to offer the country. Newt Gingrich, Romney and other Republicans also regularly accuse Obama of "class warfare."

Obama senior adviser David Axelrod called such criticism the "Republican cartoon" of Obama's argument.

"In some ways the race will be different depending on who the nominee is but in some ways the same because they largely subscribe to the same economic theory" of cutting taxes for the wealthy and paring back regulations, said Axelrod. He added that Obama's speech in Osawatomie, Kansas, "was a very, very good statement of his values and vision and will help frame much of what comes in the next year."

Yearly Ketchup: The Freshest Developments of 2011

The year that was 2011 is coming to an end, and so it's time to look back at the biggest news items of the year (and say "Welcome!" to Roland Emmerich's favorite year). This retrospective is in lieu of actual weekly movie news, which there isn't much of around Christmas. This is also a chance to look forward, as most of the movies that were announced in 2011 are still in our collective futures. And so, here are twelve "Fresh Development" movie news items from the past year, one for each month, that also represent some of the biggest upcoming movies of the next few years (ie, this list is a combination of movies that might be "Fresh" and those that might be box office hits as well).

The Freshest Developments of 2011

JANUARY: BATMAN'S NEW VILLAINS IN THE DARK KNIGHT RISES ARE REVEALED

Nearly a year later, the world just last week got its first glimpse of Catwoman and Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, along with all of the confusion and online debate about what exactly Bane says. It's nice to see that the teacher from Peanuts is still getting work. That so much time separates the revelation of who Anne Hathaway and Tom Hardy are playing, and our first images of them in motion, is yet another reminder of how long it takes to get these big budget superhero movies on the big screen.

FEBRUARY: HENRY CAVILL IS KAL-EL, AKA CLARK KENT, AKA SUPERMAN, AKA THE MAN OF STEEL

Legendary Pictures, Warner Bros and director Zack Snyder didn't actually start filming The Man of Steel until August, but in February, we learned who exactly would be the new Superman. Fans of Showtime's The Tudors knew who he was, but at that point, with the trailer for Immortals still a few months away, most fans had to Google Cavill's name to get an idea of what he even looked like. The casting of Superman himself was just the biggest news item in a year that saw plenty of other articles devoted to The Man of Steel. By the number of actors cast in recognizable roles, it was obvious that The Man of Steel was going to have a massive ensemble cast. Among the others cast this year were Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Russell Crowe as Jor-El, Lawrence Fishburne as Perry White, Michael Shannon as General Zod, and Diane Lane and Kevin Costner as Ma and Pa Kent. Unfortunately, 2012 will come and go and we still will not have seen this movie, as it's not currently scheduled for release until June 14, 2013.

MARCH: QUENTIN TARANTINO'S DJANGO UNCHAINED REVEALED

As much press as was devoted to the casting of The Man of Steel, this next movie probably received double the attention in 2011. And yet, as recently as March, the world didn't even know for sure that director Quentin Tarantino's next movie would be a "Spaghetti Western" set in the American South during the days of slavery. Indeed, at that point, we didn't even know the title would be Django Unchained, much less that the cast would include Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, Samuel L. Jackson, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Kurt Russell. Nope, until then, only Christoph Waltz, the breakout star from Inglourious Basterds, was mentioned as being cast (as he eventually was). Unlike The Man of Steel, we will indeed (almost) have an idea what the fuss was all about by this time next year, as The Weinstein Company has scheduled Django Unchained for December 25, 2012.

APRIL: JEREMY RENNER COMPLETES HIS FRANCHISE TRIFECTA WITH THE BOURNE LEGACY

The Hurt Locker may have made big Oscar news in early 2010, but Jeremy Renner continued to surf on that film's buzz (and that of his own performance, obviously) well into 2011. In April, having already locked major roles in The Avengers and Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Jeremy Renner achieved the rare distinction of being cast in three major action film franchises. And he did it by taking over a franchise previously associated with just one actor, Matt Damon, because the movie in question is at Universal Pictures, and it's called The Bourne Legacy. Rather than replacing Matt Damon directly as Jason Bourne, Jeremy Renner will be playing an entirely different agent trained by the same Treadstone operatives. Frequent Bourne screenplay adaptor (and director of Duplicity and Michael Clayton) Tony Gilroy is directing The Bourne Legacy, and the film's cast also includes Rachel Weisz, Joan Allen, Albert Finney, Scott Glenn and Stacy Keach. Universal Pictures is currently scheduling The Bourne Legacy for August 3, 2012.

MAY: KATHRYN BIGELOW LUCKS OUT AS OSAMA BIN LADEN'S LUCK RUNS OUT

Sometimes, people are just in the right place at the right time. This year, in the case of director Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker), it was a case of being smart and/or lucky enough to be developing exactly the right movie. The world learned on May 2nd of the death of terrorist leader Osama bin Laden, and within 24 hours, the world also knew of Bigelow's plans for a movie called (at the time) Kill Bin Laden. Rather than having to compete with a gaggle of other filmmakers all racing to make a movie about Osama bin Laden's death, Kathryn Bigelow already had a script and a production pretty much ready to start. All that had to be changed in Bigelow's story of Navy SEALS looking for OBL was the third act, in which the raid on his compound is actually executed. Bigelow's project (which was also picked up by Sony Pictures) hasn't yet started filming, but the actors reportedly in talks to costar in the ensemble cast include Tom Hardy (Bane from The Dark Knight Rises), Guy Pearce (Memento), Idris Elba (Heimdall in Thor), and Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo). It's a good bet that Sony Pictures probably hopes to get this currently untitled military thriller in theaters by this time in 2012.

JUNE: THE COEN BROS' NEXT MOVIE WILL BE A FOLK MUSICAL BIOPIC

As much as Quentin Tarantino was in the news this year, 2011 also marked the beginning of production for the Coen Bros on their next movie, and for the most part, people sort of ignored it. This is hardly a new thing for the Coens, who are often able to make their movies in relative obscurity, although that doesn't entirely make sense, given their impressive track record (Fargo, The Big Lebowski, No Country for Old Men, True Grit, etc). It was in late June this year that it was first revealed that the Coens will next be working on a 1960s folk music biopic (loosely) based upon the memoirs of the late Dave van Ronk. That project is now known by the title Inside Llewyn Davis, and the cast includes John Goodman, Justin Timberlake, and Carey Mulligan, with Oscar Isaac (Sucker Punch, Drive) as the title character.

Mike Medavoy
JULY: MOVE OVER, OSAMA; ONE OF THE TOP NEWS STORIES OF 2010 GETS ITS OWN MOVIE AS WELL: THE CHILEAN MINERS

Although it might seem like Hollywood is perpetually stuck in a cycle of remakes and sequels, the art of the true story (and/or biopic) is still alive. Big deal producer Mike Medavoy (Black Swan, Zodiac) proved that in July by securing an agreement to make a movie based upon the true story of the 33 Chilean miners trapped in the Copiapo copper and gold mine in 2010. Medavoy moved quickly, hiring screenwriter Jose Rivera (The Motorcycle Diaries, Trade) to adapt the miners' stories. There hasn't since been any news in the five months since about who might direct this project, but given the awareness of the miners' experience, it is likely to remain a top priority for Medavoy and Rivera for 2012 as well.

AUGUST: BLADE RUNNER 2 PROVES THAT ALIEN ISN'T THE ONLY OLD SCIENCE FICTION PROPERTY RIDLEY SCOTT IS REVISITING

Just a few hours before this column was written this week, 20th Century Fox finally revealed the first teaser trailer for Prometheus, the new science fiction from director Ridley Scott. Previously referred to as a prequel to Alien, this new film still has much about it (including the graphics of the title) that hint at its connection to the Aliens franchise. In August, we learned of Ridley Scott's plans to return to the other 1980s science fiction title that was a big reason he became a fan favorite. The movie in question is, of course, Blade Runner, that 1982 modern classic starring Harrison Ford in a neo-Noir tale of android intrigue set in a dystopian future Los Angeles. Scott signed on to direct a new Blade Runner film, but pretty much everything else about the project, including characters, casting, and whether or not it's a prequel or a sequel, is yet unknown.

SEPTEMBER: THE BOOK OF MORMON TO SOMEDAY FOLLOW SOUTH PARK AND TEAM AMERICA

Just a couple of months after their Broadway play The Book of Mormon was the big winner at this year's Tony Awards, Trey Parker and Matt Stone answered the next inevitable question with something like "someday, sure." No definitive timeline or schedule (except "in several years") was given, but that's not really surprising anyway, given how busy Parker and Stone are likely to remain until at least 2013 with South Park. In addition to recognizing the continuing popularity of pretty much everything that Parker and Stone work on, it's also worth mentioning that September was sort of a slow news month in the film business this year. Well, it's true!

OCTOBER: THE INTERNATIONAL MOURNING OF STEVE JOBS LEADS TO AN INEVITABLE BIOPIC

Osama bin Laden wasn't the only celebrity in 2011 whose death was very closely followed by news of a related movie project. In the case of Steve Jobs, the center of attention was the biography by Walter Isaacson, which Jobs himself was actively involved in getting ready for publication in the final months of his life. Sony Pictures, the studio which had recent success with a similar movie in the form of The Social Network, was the studio that eventually acquired the rights to the book. The connections to The Social Network continued recently with the news that Aaron Sorkin is also considering signing on to adapt the script for the Steve Jobs movie. As with The Social Network, there is a strong chance that, rather than a full biopic, the Steve Jobs movie might only address a key moment in his story, or at most, just a few of those events (which include the Macintosh, the IPod, the IPhone and the IPad).

NOVEMBER: ...AND THE AWARD FOR MOST SURPRISING REVIVAL OF A FRANCHISE GOES TO: PLANET OF THE APES

In annual retrospectives, the movies that are sometimes more likely to be remembered as defining the year are those films that seemed to come out of left field and surprise us all. In 2011, one movie that did that both critically and financially was also a dreaded "reboot" of a once popular franchise: Rise of the Planet of the Apes. In November, we learned of confirmation that 20th Century Fox is indeed planning on continuing the prequel story introduced in that film, with motion-capture star Andy Serkis and the film's director Rupert Wyatt both signed for a sequel. What we don't yet know is exactly what the next film will be about (though it's easy to guess), or when 20th Century Fox might be able to get it produced.

DECEMBER: THE LONG-AWAITED ENDER'S GAME MOVIE HAS AN ALL STAR CAST

Every week, one of the most debated subjects by commenters and readers of the Weekly Ketchup is the classification of news stories as either "Fresh Developments" or "Rotten Ideas." In 2011, the long-in-development adaptation of Orson Scott Card's popular science fiction novel Ender's Game has mostly been labeled as a "Rotten Idea" for one reason: Ender's Game is being directed by Gavin Hood (X-Men Origins: Wolverine). However awful Hood's last movie might have been, however, the question lingers as to whether there is anything that could ever reverse that decision, and earn an Ender's Game news story the "Fresh Development" label. The answer has come in recent weeks in the form of the casting, which continues to surprise. Asa Butterfield, who will play the title character, has now been joined officially by his Hugo costar Ben Kingsley, as well as Harrison Ford, Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine) and Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit). Individually, the "Rotten" legacy of X-Men Origins: Wolverine remained the dominant issue, but with all of them together now, Ender's Game has at least temporarily earned the year-ending distinction of being a Fresh Develoment.

And with that, we conclude the first half of the Yearly Ketchup. Come back next week for the Most Rotten Ideas of 2011!
