Jim Miller gets bloody UFC 155 win over Joe Lauzon

UFC 155 was headed towards becoming one of the least memorable UFC pay-per-view cards in recent history until Joe Lauzon and Jim Miller stepped in the cage. The lightweights delivered a late Fight of the Year candidate as Miller won 29-28 on all three judges' cards.

Miller opened up the fight with a bevy of punches, and opened a cut on Lauzon's face early. Lauzon's wooziness allowed Miller to lock a standing arm triangle. Lauzon was able to slip out of the choke, but when he emerged, his face was covered in blood.

[Complete UFC 155 recap: Cain Velasquez mauls Junior dos Santos]

Though Miller managed better attacks and wasn't bleeding as badly as Lauzon, he still found himself in trouble late in the third round. Lauzon dove onto Miller's legs, and attempted a leg lock submission. If there wasn't so much blood covering their bodies and the canvas, Lauzon might have pulled out the win.

Lauzon told Yahoo! Sports after the fight that he required 40 stitches for the cuts sustained during the fight.

Miller was impressed by Lauzon's toughness.

?Joe Lauzon is a tough kid. I knew I was going to have to bring my best effort to put him away and I was never able to," Miller said after the fight. "That?s how good he is on the ground. And even in the last minute, look what he was trying to do to win the fight."

Tough economic news highlights need for bipartisan jobs focus

By REP. PETER BARCA ??Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012

With the next legislative session just weeks away, it is time for us to devote serious focus to the most important issue facing Wisconsin?creating good-paying jobs and doing so as quickly as possible.

If we don?t act now in a bipartisan manner on stimulating job growth and closing the skills gap, Wisconsin will continue to fall further behind our neighbors and the country as a whole. We?re already seeing evidence of what a lack of focus on jobs is doing to our state.

In its annual list of ?Best States for Business,? Forbes magazine ranked Wisconsin 42nd for 2012, down from 40th the previous year. Forbes also projects that Wisconsin will have the second-worst job growth in the nation through 2016.

In a survey released last month by Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce, one in five of its member companies indicated plans to cut jobs over the next six months. That is the highest percentage reported by this survey since the height of the recession in 2009.

Federal jobs numbers also show Wisconsin had the second-worst job growth in the country during the past year. And the nonpartisan fact-checker Politifact gave Gov. Walker its worst rating for his claim that nearly 100,000 private-sector jobs had been created in Wisconsin since he took office.

The governor?s centerpiece campaign promise was to create 250,000 jobs. He went as far as saying he would tattoo that number on his cabinet secretaries? foreheads. But he has not had the aggressiveness and focus necessary to keep that promise.

Numerous factors are behind Wisconsin?s lackluster jobs performance during the past few years. Between Republicans spending more time on divisive social issues and the state?s job creation agency being plagued by a revolving door of leadership, poor management and the lack of a business plan, it?s not surprising that so many people are still looking for work.

In the first week of the last legislative session, Democrats introduced a package of bills designed to help put people back to work quickly. We also put forward legislation during the past session designed to close the skills gap and connect workers with available jobs. We intend to re-introduce many of these same proposals this session.

Clearly we cannot afford another two years like the last two years. But we are committed to finding solutions to our most pressing problems and creating a stable, prosperous economy and secure future for middle-class families.

2 fishermen missing in central Florida lake

Authorities are searching for two fishermen whose undamaged boat was found stranded in a central Florida lake.

The Seminole County Sheriff's Office and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission continued searching Sunday for Charles Jackson of Deltona and Jason Cobb of Osteen.

Jackson's boat was found Saturday in Lake Jesup after relatives reported the men overdue from a fishing trip.

Conservation commission spokeswoman Joy Hill says the men left in a 15-foot boat early Saturday. The boat was later found in some cattails north of their camp.

Hill says the men may have been ejected from the boat. It contained two life jackets, two paddles and eight unopened beer cans.

Hill says the lake has a large alligator population but it's too cold for them to be very active.

Newtown residents ready to step out of media glare

Reporters from around the world converged on Newtown following the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School. (Eric??

NEWTOWN, Conn.--It's time to go home.

That's what many residents here have been saying about the media since Monday, when funerals began for more than two dozen adults and children killed in last week's massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

"There are people who should be able to get to these funerals," Janice Butler of Newtown told Yahoo News on Wednesday, standing a few hundred yards from the entrance to the school where Friday's shootings took place. "But some of them can't because you all are here."

At the Newtown General Store, when a member of the media thanked a store employee for a breakfast sandwich, she replied, smiling, "Thank you for leaving."

In the first days after the tragedy, most reporters here were respectful of the town's 27,000 residents, sharing in their shock and grief while trying to cover it. And most residents and shop owners seemed to understand that it was a major news story of deep interest to many readers and viewers.

Figs Restaurant welcomed TV host Geraldo Rivera for two meals late Saturday afternoon. By Tuesday, though, the restaurant had stationed one of the cooks in the parking lot, barring media from parking there.

[Related: Harsh reality of reporting tragedies]

Also Saturday, a Newtown teacher offered use of his bathroom and WiFi to several reporters. And the back dining room of the Iron Bridge bar in Sandy Hook became an ABC News bureau on Sunday, where network staff watched President Barack Obama's speech at the interfaith vigil at Newtown High School.

But on Monday, the Newtown Bee posted a note on its Facebook page, imploring its colleagues and journalists in the media to leave families of the dead alone. "PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM THE VICTIMS," the note said.

"We acknowledge it is your right to try and make contact," the paper added on Facebook, "But we beg you to do what is right and let them grieve and ready their funeral plans in peace."

Several local residents visited the page, adding their voices to the chorus of criticism.

"We want our town, our lives back," Dennis Brinkmann wrote. "You did your job, now leave us be."

"Journalists should be reporters not voyeurs," wrote another.

A sign at the entrance of Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., Dec. 18, 2012. (Dylan Stableford/Yah??

"We did turn to you when it was unfolding, because we needed to know what was going on, but now leave," Dorene Doran wrote. "We need to give these families time to themselves. Don't worry they will seek you out if they want to talk to you."

"As I drove down Main Street today I was upset at the number of cameras just aimed at the door to the funeral home," Gail Lovorn wrote, suggesting the community erect a screen to block the view. "The last thing these families need is to see their family and friends in these tender moments broadcast for the world to see."

On Tuesday night, a man walking up Church Hill Road carried a sign that read: "Dear Media, GTFO!"

There are signs that the media swarm is beginning to ease.

CNN?s Wolf Blitzer, who arrived Saturday, left Newtown after his broadcast on Tuesday night. Most of the satellite trucks that lined the center of Sandy Hook, steps from a makeshift memorial and less than a half mile from Sandy Hook Elementary, were gone on Wednesday. The parking lot at Treadwell Park, where nearly close to 100 satellite trucks were parked on Saturday, sat empty, too.

The Starbucks next to Saint Rose of Lima Church on Church Hill Road served as a makeshift international media center since the funerals began. On Wednesday, it was filled with residents heading to services for 7-year-old victim Daniel Barden--no media in sight.

But not everyone in Newtown wants to see the media gone.

"Please, please don't leave," a Sandy Hook resident named Dennis told Connecticut Public Radio's Colin McEnroe on Wednesday. "Because I know that people on the outside are feeling the same thing that the people on the inside are feeling. And it's ... it's just helplessness. So the more information they can get--as long as it's correct information--it might help them a little bit. It might, you know?"

Geminid meteor shower peaks tonight: When to watch for falling stars

A new and as-yet unnamed meteor shower may also make an appearance tonight, ramping up the celestial display even further.

Skywatchers around the world are in for a treat tonight, as the annual Geminid meteor shower is poised to put on a spectacular show.

The Geminids?will peak overnight tonight (Dec. 13) with the moon at its new phase. The skies will thus be free of the moon's glare, allowing viewers in rural areas to see perhaps 100 or more meteors per hour, experts say.

A new and as-yet unnamed?meteor shower?may also make an appearance tonight, ramping up the celestial display even further.

"Meteors?from the new shower (if any) will be visible in the early evening, with the Geminids making their appearance later on and lasting until dawn," Bill Cooke, head of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office, said in a statement.?[Photos: Geminid Meteor Shower of December 2011]

The Geminids ? so named because they appear to emanate from the constellation Gemini (The Twins) ? result when Earth plows through debris shed by the huge, enigmatic asteroid 3200 Phaethon. This is unusual for annual meteor showers, which are typically caused by comet particles.

The potential new shower's source is a comet called Wirtanen, Cooke said. Earth hasn't run into Wirtanen's debris stream before, but computer models suggest this year could be different.

If the new shower does indeed materialize, it could produce up to 30 meteors per hour tonight by itself, Cooke said. These shooting stars will seem to be coming from the constellation Picses (The Fish), so the shower may end up being called the Piscids.

A few scattered Geminids can be spotted shortly after sunset tonight. The show will really start picking up around 10 p.m. local time, experts say, and it should peak at 2 a.m. or so. You won't need binoculars or a telescope to see the shooting stars; just crane your neck up, preferably in a spot away from bright city lights.

You can also watch the meteor action online tonight if you so choose. Cooke and several NASA colleagues will host a live web chat overnight from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. EST (0400 to 0800 GMT), complete with live video of streaking meteors captured by a special camera at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. It will all happen here:?http://www.nasa.gov/connect/chat/geminids2012.html

Skywatchers who miss tonight's peak will have a few other chances to catch the Geminids this year. The shower should linger until Dec. 16 or so before petering out completely.

Editor's Note:?If you take a photo of this year's Geminids that you'd like to share with SPACE.com for a possible story or gallery, please send it, along with your comments, to spacephotos@space.com.

India Promises Defense Aid to Somalia

The Indian High Commissioner in Nairobi, Sibabrata Tripathi, has expressed the Indian government's readiness to actively support Somalia's effort to rebuild its defense forces with a view to enhance overall regional security.

His statement follows an official visit he made to the Somali Ministry of Defense in Mogadishu on Monday (December 17th) where he held talks with the Somali Defense Minister, Abdihakim Haji Mohamud Fiqi, on a wide range of ongoing issues. During the discussion, the visiting High Commissioner praised recent positive developments in Somalia and expressed his country's readiness to provide military aid to help bolster Somalia's security forces.

Mr. Fiqi, who noted the recent positive gains against Al-Shabaab with the help of AMISOM and other positive forces, said terrorism was still the biggest threat to Somalia. He highlighted the new government's ongoing security commitments against terrorism, piracy and other security challenges.

The visit of the Indian High Commissioner was the first visit by an Indian official to Somalia since the collapse of the Somali central government in 1991, but India is, reportedly, the second country after Turkey to promise direct military assistance to the new Government. IGAD has already launched a Grand Stabilization Plan for Somalia whose objectives include providing coordinated support to the new government to establish a strong national defense force

More Studies Needed to Prove Coffee Cuts Risk of Mouth and Throat Cancer: Dentist

"The study does suggest benefits but I would like to see more studies done to prove this correlation," he asserted.

Coffee, along with tea and red wine, is a top cause of damage to tooth enamel.

"As with any study, there are always variables that are not documented, such as alcohol consumption and tobacco use which are top causes of oral cancer," said the dentist who regularly assists in the diagnosis of oral cancer and works with oncological patients at Loyola.

According to Hogan, risks for oral/pharyngeal cancers include alcohol consumption, smoking, chewing tobacco, biological factors such as fungi, viruses such as HPV (especially strain 16 for oral cancers) and physical factors including exposure to UV radiation and exposure to x-rays.

Many patients dismiss the early signs of oral cancer and do not report symptoms until the cancer has spread to other parts of the body.

"Oral cancer signs range from chronic sores in the mouth that do not heal to difficulty swallowing and many patients do not think they are a big enough deal to seek medical attention," said Hogan.

He noted that the growing trend of sugary drinks also is taking a toll on oral health.

"Sports drinks and soda are also big offenders of dental disease and actually are less damaging if they are consumed at one sitting as opposed to continuously sipping on the drinks over the course of an afternoon," he said.

"Sipping prolongs the exposure of the teeth to the sugary and/or acidic liquids and increases the damage to the teeth," he explained.

Egypt opposition fears violence from Brotherhood

CAIRO (AP) ? They showed a military-style precision: Crowds of bearded Islamists proclaiming allegiance to Egypt's President Mohammed Morsi and chanting "God is great" as they descended on tents set up by anti-Morsi protesters outside the presidential palace, swinging clubs and firing rifles. They set up a detention facility, interrogating and beating captured protesters.

The scene from bloody clashes outside the presidential palace a week ago hangs over Egypt's political crisis as a daunting sign of how much more violent the confrontation could become between Morsi's Islamist supporters and the opposition that has launched a giant wave of protests against him.

Opponents of Morsi accuse his Muslim Brotherhood supporters of unleashing highly trained cadres ? fired up with religious slogans ? to crush their political rivals. They fear last week's violence was a signal that the Brotherhood will use force to push its agenda and defend its political gains in the face of a persistent protest movement demanding that Morsi withdraw a draft constitution largely written by his Islamist allies.

Ahead of a new mass rallies planned by both sides Tuesday, masked gunmen attacked anti-Morsi protesters in Cairo's central Tahrir Square before dawn, firing birdshot at them and wounding nine. It was unclear who was behind the attack, said security officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the press.

Officials from the Brotherhood and its political party deny using violence to quell critics. Regarding the clashes last Wednesday, the worst violence yet in the crisis, they say Morsi supporters were defending the palace and accuse the protesters of starting the battles. They claim their side suffered more deaths and injuries during the clashes, which left at least eight people dead. More broadly, the Brotherhood accuses former regime supporters of paying thugs in an organized campaign to topple Islamists from power, pointing to a series of attacks on Brotherhood offices the past weeks.

"The group and the party don't use violence and have no inclination to the use of violence," said Mourad Aly, a Brotherhood party spokesman. He added, "We will never allow an attack or breach on the palace."

However, when last week's violence began, the only protesters outside the palace were around 100 conducting a sit-in in the tents, and the allegiances of those killed remain controversial. Opponents and rights lawyers charge that the Brotherhood has tried to convince some families to declare their deceased sons as Brotherhood.

Testimonies and videos that have emerged from the nearly 15 hours of street clashes show an organized group of disciplined Islamists, working in units and carrying out military-type exercises as they broke up the tent sit-in at the palace.

Opponents of the Brotherhood frequently accuse the group of running a "militia." The group is known for its tight discipline, and it acknowledges that many of its young members undergo organized martial arts training ? but it vehemently denies forming any militias.

Tharwat el-Kherbawy, a former Brotherhood member and now an opponent of the group, said the Brotherhood's central organizational doctrine ? calling on members to "hear and obey" their leaders ? gives it a military-like structure.

When the Brotherhood met a stronger than expected protest movement, "they had no hesitation in hastening to implement their ideas and resorting to violence," he said. "If their empowerment project is facing resistance, this resistance must be quelled."

Wednesday's showdown was the fiercest display of the Brotherhood's strength, but similar, smaller attacks on opponents by Brotherhood members took place at least three times earlier this year when secular and liberal groups criticized the Brotherhood's grip on power.

During last Wednesday's fighting, nearly 140 anti-Morsi protesters were tortured and interrogated at a makeshift detention center set up by the Brotherhood along the walls of the presidential palace, according to witnesses. The detained protesters were filmed making forced confessions that they had received foreign funds, according to some who were held and an Egyptian journalist who snuck into the site.

One of the victims, Yehia Negm, an Egyptian diplomat, told The Associated Press he was dragged on the ground to the center where he was beaten. He is suffering from multiple injuries in the head, eye, nose, and ribs from beating and had remains of pellets in his forehead from gunfire during the clashes.

"When they found my ID that says a diplomat, they started accusing me of working with security agencies, of being a spy and of serving foreign countries," Negm said. "They rained beatings down on me. They started yelling at me, saying, 'You infidels, you want to burn the country down, you are not Muslims.'"

Around 20 Islamists manned the center, made up of metal barricades erected against the palace wall, said Mohammed Elgarhy, a local journalist with the daily Al-Masry Al-Youm who snuck in and spent nearly four hours there. Among them was a man he recognized as a well-known Brotherhood lawyer and two others he overheard speaking with a Brotherhood leader. The others, who he said he believed were Brotherhood members, carried out the beatings and interrogations.

"The Brotherhood were carrying out the job of the Interior Ministry," Elgarhy told AP. "They would arrest anyone they suspected ... asking them questions such as who paid for you to come here."

Troops from the Central Security Forces guarded the site, but did not interfere, he said. The Brotherhood has not addressed accusations about the detention center but says it did seize protesters and hand them over to police.

The violence came a day after hundreds of thousands marched on the palace in Cairo's upper middle class district of Heliopolis, demanding Morsi withdraw the draft constitution and sweeping powers that he had given himself in a series of decrees.

After the rally, around 100 protesters remained in the tent camp. In response, the Brotherhood called a "general mobilization" of its members, and its spokesman said the group will protect the legitimacy of the president and state institutions.

The next day, last Wednesday, thousands of Islamists lined up on a main boulevard near the palace, chanting "Power, Resolve, Faith, Morsi's men are everywhere," and threatening to douse the tents with gasoline, according to video of the scene posted on YouTube.

The Islamists then stormed the camp, chanting "God is great" and "Islamic law is fundamental in Egypt," as they tore down tents and chased away the protesters. They then ransacked the tents. Brotherhood supporters claimed they found evidence of drug use at the camp ? though they never showed any ? and that burnt charcoal and processed cheese in the tents proved the protest was foreign funded, without explanation. The accusations were reminiscent of those leveled by the regime of ousted President Hosni Mubarak against the protesters who rose up against his rule in early 2011.

As news of the attack spread, more anti-Morsi protesters arrived on the scene. Buses, shown parked nearby in videos, brought in Brotherhood supporters. By sunset a full-fledged street battle transformed Heliopolis into a war zone, spreading over at least three fronts near the palace. Protesters and witnesses put the number of Morsi supporters at up to 12,000 compared to several thousand protesters.

Bearded men in short robes waved sticks in the air as they chased groups of young men and women down darkened alleys while gunfire echoed in the background.

A resident of a building overlooking one front line said Morsi supporters appeared to be operating by what a well-rehearsed plan. They came prepared with metal sheets for barricades and motorcycles with small trailers attached brought loads of stones to pelt protesters with. The resident spoke on condition his name not be used for fear of retribution.

Some Morsi supporters were armed with rifles, firing from the edges of the front lines to avoid being detected, said Mahmoud Zaghloul, a 22-year old protester who got hit with a rock in his head. He also said many in the Morsi camp came prepared with helmets with plexi-glass face screens.

At least one video shown on a private TV station shows a man in the Morsi camp, wearing a full helmet, taking a professional shooter position, bending his knees and aiming with a rifle.

"One of the most disturbing things was how they chanted 'God is Great' as they aimed at us," as if they were firing at infidels, Zaghloul said.

Some in the anti-Morsi camp also had firearms, witnesses said. At least one amateur video circulating online that showed an anti-Morsi protester pointing a pistol from behind a barricade at the opposing camp.

The exact circumstances of the online videos could not be independently confirmed, but their contents were consistent with other AP reporting.

groupware corina: Home & Family; Gardening, Pets, Bus Stop

Plant perennials that slugs and snails won?t be interested in eating. Slugs and snails will quickly destroy your garden if you let them. They gravitate towards perennials with smooth thin leaves, particularly on younger plants. Perennials with hairy, tough leaves as well as those with unpleasant taste are not appetizing to snails and slugs. Achillea, euphorbia, helleborus, heuchera and campanula are good choices that slugs don?t like.

A set of comfortable knee pads makes a great investment if your garden is full of plant material that stays low to the ground. If you spend a large portion of your gardening session on your knees, it could create pain over time. Having a good pair of knee pads will cushion your knees in comfort.

Vegetables tend to soften during the hottest part of the day, which means they are easily damaged, even when handled with care. Cut them with a tool rather than pulling or twisting, otherwise you could damage the plant itself.

Add more value to your property. When you landscape, you can get one of the highest returns. Investing in plants can raise the value of your property by 20%, or sometimes even more. Select plants that will adapt well to your regional area and require minimum maintenance.

In order to rid your garden of pests, take advantage of plant materials and other organic matter. For example, slugs can be deterred by the presence of marigolds or onions. Using wood ash as mulch around the base of trees and shrub seedlings will also help keep away insect pests. By utilizing these methods, you will not have to apply chemical pesticides on your vegetation.

Pull all the weeds in your garden. Weeds will cause your garden to become overgrown and cluttered. To help with weed destruction, use white vinegar. The acid in white vinegar kills weeds. You may also be using plants that need that very same acid. Apply it full strength to any areas where weeds are a problem.

One should build a border with a fence around their garden before they even start planting their garden. A protective barrier that protects a garden from animals gives plants the chance they need to grow from seeds to maturity.

Identify a plant that will be the most prominent object of the landscape. A solid focal point will draw peoples attention to your garden, leaving them to admire your unique design. Usually this focal point is a luscious plant that is distinctly different from the plants and scrubs that surround it.

You should think about planting evergreens that yield berries in your garden. This will aid in giving your garden great color, even during the winter when other plants have lost their colors. Other winter plants include the American Holly, Winterberry, The American Cranberrybush and the Common Snowberry.

Put your gardening plan down on paper. Make sure to write down your list of what vegetables you are going to plant, as well as make a very detailed drawing of the garden. Be sure to remember things like the heights of the plants you want to grow, maturity and what they need in terms of moisture and sunlight.

Add some heather plants to your garden, to attract good insects. Heather is great for getting bees to stop by at the beginning of spring, as heather plants have nectar available early in the season. Because heather beds require very little maintenance, they often become the home of spiders, ground beetles, and other insects that can benefit your garden. If you choose to employ the use of heather, always make sure to throw on a pair of gloves during the pruning process.

Start your peas in a protected indoors environment rather than outside. Pea seeds germinate better indoors. This method also results in hardier seedlings that can better resist insects and disease. Once the seedlings are sturdy enough, they can be transplanted to their rightful place in the garden.

You can be friendly to the environment by using rainwater to water your plants. You can collect the rainwater in a barrel or other container. This will lessen your water bill, and help you use more natural resources. Try this alternative to help save you money and keep your garden natural.

Watering your garden too little or too much is to be avoided if you want your garden to grow properly. Over watering can cause the roots of your plants to rot and under watering does not give your plants the moisture they need to grow healthy and strong. Check the moisture level of your plants often to keep the soil as moist as necessary.

Select plant varieties capable of producing large yields. There are genetically modified plants that resist cold and/or disease. These often give higher yields due to higher survival rates.

Try using chicken tractors to fertilize your garden area. Chicken tractors are mobile chicken coops that include an open floor beneath a covered living area. As the chickens drop that needed fertilizer, they are nourishing themselves with any available nutrition from their surroundings. When your chickens have effectively cleared and fertilized one area, you simply move the chicken tractor on to the next patch.

Pay attention to how you lay sod. You want to prepare the soil before you lay down the sod. Thoroughly weed the soil, and work it into a fine, smooth tilth. Flatten your soil and make it slightly compact. Dampen the soil completely. Lay the sod down in alternated rows, keeping the joints set off from one another. Compact the sod down so you form a flat and even surface, then fill in any crevices within the sod by using some soil. Your sod should be watered everyday for at least two weeks, then it will root itself and walk on it.

After reading this article, you should now see how beneficial gardening can be. You also now have the basic knowledge base to began gardening on your own. The advice given here will help you to be able to plan and execute a beautiful and bountiful garden. Use this advice to enjoy your own beautiful garden.

Rogers puts all Windows Phone 8 devices on sale, keeps them well under $100

Rogers is currently in a full-court press to get us using Microsoft-branded devices, and it just made that clear through steep, across-the-board sales on everything Windows Phone 8. Nokia's Lumia 920 has dropped from $100 to $50; the yet-to-ship Samsung ATIV S has already dropped from $150 to a more tempting $80 for early adopters. The sweetest of deals may be for the HTC Windows Phone 8X, which has dipped to $30 for a 16GB model and a solitary penny for the 8GB version. For all the cuts, Rogers is careful to warn that they're part of a "limited time offer" and might not last beyond the weekend. We're delving deeper for an official statement on the drops, although the ATIV S cut may be to counter a leaked (and as yet unconfirmed) Bell deal at the same price. Whatever the cause, we'll gladly take steep discounts on cutting-edge hardware.

Dying teacher battled son after attack in classroom, saving students ...

Courtesy of Casper College

James Krumm, 56, and Heidi Arnold, 42, were stabbed to death on Friday by Krumm's 25-year-old son, Christopher Krumm.

By NBC News staff

Police say a?Wyoming community college teacher?James Krumm was a hero for fighting off his son on Friday, potentially saving the lives of six of his computer science students.

"I can tell you the courage that was demonstrated by Mr. Krumm was absolutely without equal," Casper Police Chief Chris Walsh said, according to The Associated Press.

On Friday, Christopher Krumm, 25, stabbed his father?s girlfriend to death before driving to Casper College, where his father was teaching a class. He was equipped with a compound bow and arrow and two knives, which he carried into the building under a blanket.

When he entered the classroom, Christopher Krumm stood about four feet from his father, pulled back the bowstring and shot an arrow through his father?s head, the Casper Tribune reported.

His father, James Krumm, 56, fell but got back up and struggled with his son, the Tribune reported.

That?s when Christopher Krumm stabbed himself, then plunged the knife into his father?s chest, killing him, Walsh said.

When police arrived, the elder Krumm had died and the younger was taking his final breaths.

Back at his home, girlfriend Heidi Arnold?s body lay in front of the house for 11 hours, neighbor Heather Meier told the Tribune. Arnold, 42, was barefoot and her midriff was visible, Meier said. Authorities didn?t cover her body.

"I can?t keep it out of my head," Meier told the Tribune.

Police believe that Christopher Krumm drove from Vernon, Conn., where he was living, and booked into a motel on the outskirts of town on Thursday, the day before the killings.

Matt DiPinto, a neighbor in his apartment building in Vernon, described an interaction he had with Krumm to the Hartford Courant newspaper. Krumm was giving him a ride back from McDonald?s.

"He told me his dad gave him Asperger's (syndrome), that his dad shouldn't have passed it on," DiPinto said. "He said his dad should be castrated. I didn't know him that well, he just kind of said it out of nowhere, so that kind of threw me off a little."

On the Casper College website, James Krumm described himself as a teacher born in London, England and partly raised in Germany. He started teaching at Casper College in 2002.

(AP) ? The Fiesta Bowl will be in the rotation when a playoff system replaces the BCS.

The 2013 game might provide a glimpse of what a playoff in the desert might look like.

Oregon and Kansas State, teams still in the national-title picture just two weeks ago, will meet at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale on Jan. 3, giving the Fiesta Bowl a second straight marquee matchup of teams in the top 5 of the BCS standings.

The Ducks (11-1), with Heisman Trophy contender Kenjon Barner and all those fleet-footed players against the gritty Wildcats (11-1) and their own Heisman-worthy quarterback, Collin Klein.

Yeah, this should be good, maybe even better than last year.

The 2012 Fiesta Bowl was certainly a memorable one: Oklahoma State vs. Stanford, Nos. 3 and 4 in the BCS, dynamic teams with two of the nation's best quarterbacks in Brandon Weeden and the Cardinal's Andrew Luck.

The game matched the hype, with the Cowboys outlasting Stanford 41-38 in overtime, giving the Fiesta Bowl a much-needed boost after nearly losing its BCS status due to financial improprieties and a dud of a game in 2011.

Oregon and Kansas State, Nos. 4 and 5 in the BCS standings, have the potential to one-up 2012.

Oregon, No. 5 in the AP Top 25, has been one of the nation's best teams under coach Chip Kelly, using its swarm-of-bees offense to reach the BCS title game in 2011 and win the Rose Bowl for the first time in 95 years last season.

The Ducks were one of the front-runners to reach the title game again this season, steamrolling opponents through their first 10 games with what may be the nation's most unstoppable offense.

The Wildcats' run was a little more surprising.

Kansas State, seventh in the AP poll, opened some eyes by trouncing Miami in its second game and started to draw national attention by knocking off Oklahoma in Norman on Sept. 22. Behind the do-everything Klein and its tough defense, the Wildcats kept piling up wins and rising up the rankings.

After defending national champion Alabama lost to Texas A&M on Nov. 10, Kansas State moved up to No. 1 in the BCS standings and Oregon was No. 2.

All the Wildcats and Ducks had to do was win their final two games and they would almost assuredly play in the BCS title game.

They ended up losing on the same day, turning the BCS on end.

Kansas State fell flat under the pressure, run over 52-24 by unranked Baylor. The Ducks couldn't get their high-flying offense going against Stanford and lost 17-14 in overtime.

That moved Notre Dame up to No. 1 and put the SEC back in the BCS championship picture.

With its win over No. 3 Georgia this weekend, the Crimson Tide earned a spot in Miami on Jan. 7 to face the Fighting Irish for the national title.

Kansas State bounced back to beat Texas 42-24 on Saturday night, sending Wildcat fans rushing onto the field after the school earned its third conference championship in 117 years.

Oregon closed out its regular season a week earlier, rolling over No. 16 Oregon State 48-24 in the Civil War to keep its BCS bowl hopes alive.

The Wildcats and Ducks won't play for a national championship, but they sure gave the Fiesta Bowl a boost with another matchup that could be the 1A to the title game.

The United Nations climate chief is urging people not to look solely to their governments to make tough decisions to slow global warming, and instead to consider their own role in solving the problem. Approaching the half-way point of two-week climate talks in Doha, Christiana Figueres, the head of the U.N.'s climate change secretariat, said Friday, Nov. 30, 2012 that she didn't see "much public interest, support, for governments to take on more ambitious and more courageous decisions."(AP Photo/Ross D. (AP) ? At Friday prayers in Qatar's most popular mosque, the imam discussed the civil war in Syria, the unrest in Egypt and the U.N. endorsement of an independent state of Palestine.

Not a word about climate change, even though the Middle Eastern nation of Qatar is hosting a U.N. conference where nearly 200 countries are trying to forge a joint plan to fight global warming, which climate activists say is the greatest modern challenge to mankind.

"Unfortunately the Arab and Islamic countries have political and economic problems," said Adham Hassan, a worshipper from Jordan streaming out of the al-Khatabb mosque in Doha. "Islam calls for the protection of the environment, but the Muslim countries are mostly poor and they didn't cause pollution and aren't affected by climate change."

Of six mosques contacted by The Associated Press in the Qatari capital, only one included an environmental message in the Friday prayers, telling those in attendance to plant trees, shun extravagance and conserve water and electricity.

The Quran, Islam's holy book, is filled with more than 1,500 verses to nature and Earth. Yet the voice of Islamic leaders is missing from the global dialogue on warming.

That disappoints Muslim environmental activists, who believe the powerful pull of Islam could be the ideal way to change behavior in both poor countries, where many people's main source of information is the mosque, and in some wealthy countries like Qatar where Islam remains important even as rapid growth has made it the world's top per capita emitter of carbon dioxide.

"It's absolutely frustrating," said Fazlun Khalid, founder of the U.K.-based Islamic Foundation for Ecology and Environmental Sciences, which oversees projects around the world that use Islamic teachings to combat problems ranging from deforestation to overfishing.

"We get very little support from Muslims," he said. "They don't connect. We have to wake them up to the fact their existence is threatened by their own behavior. Modernity and the economic development paradigm is about dominating nature. Islam, as you are aware, is submission to the will of the creator. We need to remind ourselves that we have to submit."

As the annual U.N. climate conference neared its halfway point in Doha, the usual splits opened up between rich and poor nations over how to divide the burden ? and financial cost ? of protecting the world from overheating.

U.N. climate chief Christiana Figueres lamented that she didn't see "much public interest, support, for governments to take on more ambitious and more courageous decisions."

"Each one of us needs to assume responsibility. It's not just about domestic governments," she said.

The talks are aimed at limiting the level of warming to 2 degrees C (3.6 F), compared to temperatures before the industrial revolution. So the main focus is to cut the emissions of greenhouse gases that a vast majority of climate scientists say is to blame for the rising temperatures.

That goal gets more difficult to reach ever year. Temperatures have already risen about 0.8 degrees C (1.4 degrees F), according to the latest report by the U.N.'s scientific panel on climate change. And a series of reports before and during the conference warned that global emissions are still increasing, primarily driven by the rapid growth of emerging economies such as China and India.

World religions are seeking a more active role in climate change and sustainability issues. The Interfaith Declaration on Climate Change project ? endorsed by Christianity, Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism and Sikhism ? was a regular presence at the U.N. climate talks in Copenhagen in 2009, while the Dalai Lama has repeatedly called on governments to take climate change more seriously. Religious leaders in the United States have launched a movement known as "green religion" or "eco-theology, with groups like the Evangelical Environmental Network endorsing clean energy and calling on people to consume less.

Muslims are also slowly heeding the call.

Egypt's government-appointed Muslim Grand Mufti Ali Gomaa, also known at the green mufti, has been outspoken on pollution and climate change, calling them greater threats than war, according to the consultancy Green Compass Research. The holy month of Ramadan has taken on a greener theme, with Muslims across the Middle East and the United States using it to touch on food waste and sustainability. Small-scale campaigns using Islam including one aimed at turtle conservation in Malaysia and illegal mining in Indonesia have been rolled out.

"It's becoming a more important part of Islamic discourse, a more holistic approach to what it means to be a responsible Muslim in the world today," said Tamara Sonn, a humanities professor at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. "There are greater levels of education and overall global awareness of the importance of environmental concerns facilitated by advances in communication, the Internet."

But Muslim environmental activists say more could be done.

Too often, they complain, discussions of the role of Islam and the environment are limited to conferences. They say religious leaders could issue fatwas on the environment, and governments could introduce curriculums in schools highlighting themes found in the Quran such as the importance of nature, treating animals compassionately and the prohibition on wastefulness.

"The majority of Muslim scholars, leaders, and activists whose major concerns are ritualistic and the legalistic aspects of Islam, themselves have not seen the environmental issues and problems as their immediate concern," Muhamad Ali, assistant professor Islamic Studies University of California, Riverside, said in an email. "While they focus on the purity and validity of a ritual act, they lack understanding and awareness of the immediacy and cruciality of the environment crisis as a common problem. Besides, like other monotheists in general, they see human beings as superior over the natural world."

Khalid has seen first-hand how Islam can persuade Muslims to change their ways on sustainability issues. He once went to Zanzibar after conservation groups failed to persuade fishermen to stop using dynamite on coral reefs. After leading several workshops that leaned heavily on Quranic teachings, he said the fishermen never again used destructive practices.

"They stopped dynamiting coral reefs in 24 hours," said Khalid, who has similar successes in Nigeria and Pakistan with forest protection. "It had a profound impact on the local fishermen. One of the fishermen told me that we can disobey the laws of the government but we can't disobey the laws of the creator."
