Moving pets to New Orleans | Rent Apartments in New Orleans and ...

January 16, 2012 ? 9:38 am

One of the big stresses of moving to New Orleans, and a priority of moving anywhere, ?is finding the right way to move your pet. There are many different options and ways you can go about helping your pet make the transition to your new place, depending on the type of animal you have. One of the best ways to ensure a safe and easy move for your pet is to hire a pet transport service. While this may not be ideal if you?re moving on a shoe-string budget, the little bit of extra money can go a long way in offering you peace of mind. However, there are a few things you should look for and ask about when choosing the right transport for your pet.

Look for a service that offers frequent stops for your pet

If the transport service?s trip is scheduled to take more than one day, make sure that hotel rest stops are part of their agenda. While some pet transport services may choose to save money by simply pulling the vehicle over at night and having the driver and pet sleep in the vehicle, this is not ideal. A hotel rest stop ensures that the driver is well rested and will be operating the vehicle safely, after a good night?s sleep! It should also be a priority for any hotel rest stops to include hotels that are pet friendly so that your pet isn?t left in a vehicle over night. This way, your pet will be able to stretch and sleep comfortably, and won?t be left out in the heat or cold of a vehicle!

?Find a pet transport service that will be transporting ONLY your pets.

Many quality transport services can offer you the option of transporting your pets exclusively in their vehicle. Whether you have multiple pets or only one pet, this should be an option that is available to you when asking around. Making sure that your pet isn?t transported with other animals can help to decrease the stress levels of your pet during an experience that can already be a little frightening for them. Also, while a quality transport service will require proof of vaccination, making sure that your pet is the only one being transported ensures that your furry friend won?t be exposed to other animals who could carry disease. You can also rest easy knowing that your pet won?t be exposed to any other potentially aggressive animals. Even if another animal hasn?t shown signs of aggression, moving can be a trying experience for pets and can change their behavior. Don?t risk exposing your dog or cat to any other stresses or dangers! Make sure that they can be transported by themselves!

Ask about how frequently the pet transport service you choose will be taking scheduled breaks throughout the move.

Both dogs and cats need time to stretch and use the bathroom, with dogs needing the added attention of a walk. Find out what the pet transport service?s plan is for this and how often you can expect them to stop to let your pet stretch and use the bathroom. If you have an animal with special needs, it?s imperative that you let them know what these needs are to ensure they can be accommodated.

Make the move a safe and happy one for you and your pet! Do a little homework beforehand, and you?ll find the experience can be much easier for both of you.

Democrat seeks GOP names on Countrywide VIP loan list (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? The top Democratic member of a congressional oversight panel turned up the heat on its Republican chairman on Tuesday to identify the four GOP lawmakers who got special treatment in the controversial "Friends of Angelo" mortgage program run by the now-defunct Countrywide Financial Corp.

Representative Elijah Cummings of Maryland, the ranking Democrat on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, sent a letter on Tuesday to the panel's chairman, Representative Darrell Issa, a California Republican, in which he pressed for disclosure of all four GOP congressmen's names. In the letter, Cummings took issue with how Issa has handled the investigation into the Countrywide VIP loan program.

"In response to your subpoena, the Committee obtained information about four previously unknown instances in which Members of Congress received VIP loans, including three current Republican House Members and one former Republican House Member. After discovering that all of these Members are Republicans, you sent a letter on December 16, 2011, referring their cases to the House Ethics Committee," Cummings wrote in the letter dated January 17th to Issa.

The "Friends of Angelo" program's name refers to Angelo Mozilo, the former chairman and CEO of Countrywide, the California-based lender that became a dominant player in the mortgage business during the housing boom. In October 2010, Mozilo agreed to pay $67.5 million in a combined penalty and "disgorgement of ill-gotten gains" to settle SEC charges of fraud and insider trading related to Countrywide's risky subprime mortgage lending practices. At the time, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission said the $22.5 million fine was the largest ever paid in an SEC settlement by a senior executive of a publicly traded company.

Issa has waged a high-profile campaign for three years to obtain mortgage files of members of Congress who received special treatment from Countrywide.

POTENTIAL FOR A POLITICAL FIRESTORM

Disclosures about members of Congress getting discounted loans and other financial perks have the potential for a huge backlash in an election year.

Veteran GOP Representatives Howard McKeon and Elton Gallegly, both Republicans of California, have admitted their names are on a list of members of the U.S. House of Representatives who received discounted loans from Countrywide, according to the Saturday edition of The Wall Street Journal.

Cummings criticized Issa for reversing course during the investigation after previously saying he would disclose the names of any lawmakers who received VIP loans. Instead, after receiving information about four previously unknown instances of politicians winning favor from the mortgage lender last month, Issa sent the names to the House Ethics Committee.

"Since you failed to consult with me before taking these actions, I have several questions about how you want to proceed with the investigation," Cummings wrote.

The Maryland Democrat called on Issa to name the two remaining loan recipients. Cummings also wanted to know why Issa planned to interview Countrywide officials who were involved in the "Friends of Angelo" loan dealings.

"Rather than publicly identifying the four additional Members who received Countrywide loans or attempting to determine whether they took any official actions on behalf of Countrywide, you chose instead to refer their cases to the Ethics Committee," Cummings wrote.

"These sudden shifts raise key questions about how you plan to proceed with this investigation," he added.

Cummings also asked if Issa intends to schedule public hearings on the investigation and whether he will call on Mozilo to testify.

A spokesman for Issa was not immediately available for comment late on Tuesday.

After the housing bust and widespread defaults on subprime mortgages, the failing Countrywide was acquired by Bank of America in 2008.

UK seeks ways to create own golden age of cinema (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? The British government has urged its national broadcasters and audiences to get behind the country's film industry to promote a cultural brand on a par with Hollywood and French cinema and maintain its current golden run of box office success.

British cinema has enjoyed a string of hits in recent years, from "Slumdog Millionaire" to "The King's Speech," and a government-appointed panel set out on Monday how it intended to maintain that form during the tough economic environment.

The review calls for British broadcasters to help fund and show British films; for financial support for a wide range of movies ranging from the small art-house movies to blockbusters and the reinvestment of profits into the industry to generate further success.

British Prime Minister David Cameron sparked controversy last week when he suggested that the British movie industry should focus on box office success rather than critical acclaim.

The movie industry is worth an estimated 4.2 billion pounds ($6.42 billion)to the British economy each year, but much of that comes from blockbusters like the Harry Potter franchise that are often bankrolled by Hollywood studios.

Independent British films had a share at the box office of just 5.5 percent between 2001 and 2010.

Film makers argue however that they cannot predict how successful a film will be until it has hit the screens and that they do not wish to merely recreate Hollywood-style movies in a hunt for financial success.

The government-appointed panel appeared to agree on Monday, saying it would look to support as many films as possible.

"British film is going through something of a golden period," the report said. "A run of really good, successful, British-made and British-based movies has been taking not just British cinema audiences but many others around the world by storm.

"The key question, though, is how do we make this something that lasts for more than just an all-too-brief year? How do we secure greater consistency in the quality and success of British film?"

One of the suggestions includes returning the profits from a movie to the development and production teams, to encourage further investment in future films.

Funding for a film from a body such as the National Lottery used to be considered a loan that was expected to be paid back from the film's income.

A British Film Week around the country showing old and new films was cited as a way to promote British movies while lessons in school could teach children about British film heritage, it said.

Broadcasters such as ITV and BSkyB were also urged to do more to promote British films, either through help in funding or through showing the films once they are released for television.

The BBC, the publicly funded broadcaster which dominates much of the media industry in Britain, invests 12 million pounds per year to British films and while the panel welcomed the support, it said it would like to see this increase further.

Chris Smith, a former secretary of state who produced the report, said television accounted for 80 percent of the total film audience, making the role of broadcasters all the more important.

Madonna Praises Lady Gaga's 'Rawness'

Queen of Pop opens up about the Mother Monster on 'The Graham Norton Show.'
By Jocelyn Vena

Photo: Jon Furniss/ WireImage

Here in the States, Madonna sat down with ABC News and had some interesting comments about Lady Gaga. In another interview, on Friday's (January 13) "The Graham Norton Show," the singer seemed to take the high road and likened her early days of hustling in New York City to Gaga's beginnings.

"When I first saw her, I saw her performing at a very small club in Manhattan a couple of years ago, maybe it was like three years ago," she said. "I was actually really impressed by her. I thought she was really cool and she did remind me of me back in the day. I liked her rawness and there was something fresh about there and ballsy, and when she spoke to the audience, she sounded like she had a similar sense of humor to me, quite ironic, and I liked her. So I do think she is very talented."

That was really the end of the subject during their chat, other than when Madonna teased the British talk-show host about naming his dog after her. However, when he said his other dog was named Bailey, she quipped, "Not Gaga?"

Some of that sentiment was mirrored in Madge's ABC interview, the rest of which airs on Friday's night's 20/20. While she did call Gaga's "Born This Way" song "reductive" when asked about comparisons to her own "Express Yourself," she went on to say that she sees a lot of her own work in Gaga's.

"I certainly think she references me a lot in her work. And sometimes I think it's amusing and flattering and well-done," she said, later adding that she thinks Gaga is "a very talented artist" and that she's making a "statement about taking something that was in the zeitgeist, you know, 20 years ago and turning it inside out and reinterpreting it."

Madonna is currently making the rounds promoting her next album, M.D.N.A., as well as her film "W.E."

What do you think of Madonna's Gaga thoughts? Let us know in the comments!

Does Deodorant Ingredient Affect Breast Cancer Risk? (HealthDay)

THURSDAY, Jan. 12 (HealthDay News) -- For several years, researchers have studied a possible link between substances called parabens -- widely used as a germ-fighting preservative in cosmetics such as deodorant/antiperspirants -- and breast cancer.

Investigators have learned that parabens, also found in some drugs and food products, can mimic weakly the action of the female hormone estrogen -- an established risk factor for breast cancer. And the fact that a disproportionate number of breast tumors occur nearer the underarm also had scientists wondering.

But now, British researchers who examined breast tissue samples from 40 women who had mastectomies have found that traces of parabens are widespread in tissues, even in the seven women who said they'd never used underarm products.

"The implication is that in these seven nonusers, the paraben measured must have come from another product or products," said Dr. Philippa Darbre, a cancer researcher at the University of Reading who has long studied the issue.

In the study, published online in January in the Journal of Applied Toxicology, Darbre and her colleagues report that one or more kinds of parabens were found in 158 of the 160 samples taken from the tissue collected from the 40 women. They found 96 samples contained all five of the most common paraben esters (forms).

The levels of paraben found were higher, by about four times, than Darbre found when she did a similar but smaller study in 2004. "Since 2004, many manufacturers (although not all) have been removing parabens from the underarm deodorant/antiperspirant products and so I was rather surprised when we found higher levels of parabens in these breast tissues (sourced after 2004)," Darbre said.

Higher levels of one form of paraben were found in the region of the breast closest to the armpit, she said, and the women had a disproportionate incidence of breast cancer in that area.

However, Darbre cautioned that the research cannot be taken to imply cause and effect.

"Although estrogen is an acknowledged component in the development of breast cancer, it remains to be established as to whether environmental chemicals with estrogenic [estrogen-like] properties contribute a functional component to the disease process," she said.

"I remain as ambivalent as ever about hounding any one chemical," she added. "I feel sure the issue is bigger than one chemical." Darbre believes the parabens found in breast tissue come from a wider range of products than underarm cosmetic products.

More research is needed, Darbre noted. Meanwhile, she suggests women cut down or cut out the use of cosmetic products as much as possible. "We simply use too much in the modern world -- too much for our body systems and too much for the wider environment," she said.

For its part, the American Cancer Society finds no clear link between deodorant/antiperspirants and breast cancer. In a posting on its Web page, it notes that, "There are no strong epidemiological studies in the medical literature that link breast cancer risk and antiperspirant use, and very little scientific evidence to support this claim."

Dr. Michael J. Thun, vice president emeritus of epidemiology and surveillance research for the American Cancer Society, reviewed the new study findings. The fact that the preservatives were found in the majority of the breast tissue samples cannot be taken to imply they actually caused the breast cancer, he said, reiterating a point the authors also emphasized.

"Rather," Thun said, "the study merely confirms earlier, smaller studies which detected parabens in breast tissue of women with cancer. It shows that parabens can be absorbed (probably from personal care products) and the underarm deodorant is not the only source."

Other studies have found that parabens, also found in lotions, makeup and sunscreen products, can be absorbed through the skin, according to the American Cancer Society. However, the society says more and larger studies are needed to find out what effect, if any, the parabens might have on breast cancer risk.

Hezbollah rejects call by U.N.'s Ban to disarm (Reuters)

BEIRUT (Reuters) ? Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah dismissed on Saturday a United Nations call for his militant anti-Israel movement to disarm, saying it was determined to maintain a military capacity to defend Lebanon.

"I affirm today, firmly, decisively and with the greatest conviction ... the choice of armed resistance," Nasrallah said. "These weapons, along with the Lebanese people and army, are the only guarantee of Lebanon's protection."

Mocking a demand by visiting U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon that Hezbollah lay down its weapons, Nasrallah said he was happy that Hezbollah's military prowess was a cause for concern.

"Your concern, Secretary-General, reassures us and pleases us. What matters to us is that you are worried, and that America ... and Israel are worried with you," he said in a televised speech marking a Shi'ite holy day.

Hezbollah, which fought a devastating month-long war with Israel in 2006, has rejected a U.N. Security Council resolution that demands that it lay down its military arsenal, as all other Lebanese armed groups did at the end of the 1975-1990 civil war.

Nasrallah, in hiding since 2006 for fear of assassination, says his movement has been re-arming since the 2006 conflict, when it fired hundreds of rockets across the border daily into northern Israel.

Ban, speaking in Beirut on Friday, said he was "deeply concerned about the military capacity of Hezbollah" and the lack of progress in disarmament. "All these arms outside of the authorized state authority, it's not acceptable," he declared.

BAN SEEKS PROTECTION OF U.N. FORCE

On Saturday, as Nasrallah addressed a Hezbollah rally in the town of Baalbek by video link, Ban visited the headquarters of U.N. peacekeeping forces in southern Lebanon, close to the border with Israel and a stronghold of Hezbollah.

The U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), was expanded after the 2006 war and now has around 12,000 peacekeepers.

It has come under attack three times in the last year in bombings which wounded Italian and French soldiers. No group claimed responsibility for the attacks.

"In my meetings with government officials I called on them to increase protection for you," Ban told UNIFIL members, adding that the 293 fatalities since the force was set up in 1978 was the highest death toll suffered by a U.N. peacekeeping force.

"This weighs heavily on my heart," he said.

The Lebanese army has taken on a bigger role in the south since 2006, but given the tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, there is no sign of an exit strategy for the U.N. force there.

Ban, who was in Lebanon for a three-day visit, was due to address a conference in Beirut on Sunday on "reforms and transitions to democracy."

Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 MSM8960 development tablet hands-on (Video)

We already had the deep-dish on Qualcomm's Snapdragon S4 development platform during our on-stage pow-wow with the company's Rob Chandok but we wanted to get some extra time with the device. The MSM8960 is a developer tablet: which means it'll never retail and it's packing some serious kit including a dual-core 1.5GHz CPU, 13-megapixel cameras on both side and Qualcomm's beefy LTE gear inside. We got a few minutes to play Fight Game Heroes: a tech demo game where your character fights a musclebound company executive in a steelworks. The action was fluid and rapid, particle effects like smoke and sparks were well rendered -- we think the chip's obviously got gaming gravitas considering the early nature of the software. It's harder to see if this is more noticeably powerful than Tegra 3, but on current evidence we think nVidia's a step ahead. Just as we left, 15 Nokia executives swarmed the booth, but would it be too much to hope that the company's thinking about building a Tablet? Well, yes, obviously. But it doesn't stop us dreaming, okay? After the break we've got footage so you can decide for yourself.

Thai official's behavior at airport causes uproar

(AP) ? A Thai customs official has been demoted over a YouTube video that shows him hitting an airport security officer while refusing to be patted down.

Footage from a surveillance camera at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi airport shows the official striding through a security check, fiercely objecting to being searched and then whacking the officer's ears. The official then pointed to his badge and the junior officer bowed apologetically.

The video has a Sunday time stamp and was posted Monday. By Tuesday it had attracted more than 5,000 angry comments.

Customs Department director-general Somchai Poolsavasdi said the official was transferred to an office job during an investigation into his "distressing" behavior. The department released only the official's first name, Sombat.

Haiti quiet as quake marked with national holiday (AP)

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti ? Haitians are marking the second anniversary of the devastating 2010 earthquake with church services throughout the deeply religious country.

Women in white dresses and men in dark suits walked to church through streets were unusually quiet on what is a national holiday of remembrance.

Memorial services were planned at a U.N. base and the site north of the capital where thousands of quake victims are buried. President Michel Martelly is attending Thursday's opening of a new university with former U.S. President Bill Clinton.

The government has said the disaster killed 316,000 people and displaced 1.5 million. More than 500,000 are still in temporary settlement camps.

Ulsan: Hyundai union to suspend work

The labour union of Hyundai Motor said on Tuesday that it planned to suspend all engine output in the southeastern city of Ulsan, the company's biggest production base, from 0400 GMT after talks with management broke down.

The union said on Monday an employee set himself on fire following alleged suppression by the company and warned it would halt production at engine plants in Ulsan unless the firm acted to prevent alleged mistreatment of unionised workers. Production at the plant where the employee worked was already suspended.

We will proceed with (further) talks with management while halting engine output, a spokesman for the union said.

A Hyundai Motor spokesman said the stoppage would not have an immediate impact on production as the company had engine inventory.

Hyundai Motor shares were unfazed by the news, gaining 2.7 percent in a wider market up 1.8 percent as of 0332 GMT.

The stoppage comes as Hyundai is celebrating its Elantra compact winning car of the year honors in the United States on Monday.

Hyundai Motor, which ranks fifth in global car sales along with affiliate Kia Motors, has achieved runaway success in recent years, but labour issues remain a potential vulnerability despite the South Korean carmaker avoiding strikes for a third year in a row last year.

In November last year, Hyundai Motor's union picked a militant candidate as its new leader.

Key Stretch Awaits Hokie Basketball
by Chris Coleman, TechSideline.com,

Virginia Tech has a great opportunity ahead of them in basketball. Right now the Hokies are 11-3 on the season, and ranked in the top 40 of the RPI. They have three very winnable games coming up, and the chance to move to 14-3 and into the top 30 of the RPI is staring them right in the face.

So far this year, it appears the ACC is probably a four-bid league when it comes to the NCAA Tournament. The Hokies can't afford to lose games they shouldn't lose, and thus far they've done a good job of avoiding that. Here's a look at their next three games, which are all winnable.

Virginia Tech's Next Three Games
Date Opp. RPI Record Location
Jan. 7 Wake Forest 111 9-5 Winston-Salem
Jan. 10 Florida State 66 9-5 Blacksburg

Jan. 14

Boston College 262 5-9 Chestnut Hill

In today's preview of the Wake Forest game, we noted that Virginia Tech is better than the Demon Deacons in almost every statistical category, including strength of schedule. That's a game the Hokies should win, though everyone knows that upsets happen in basketball every day.

Online Publishing and MarketingSo far, Boston College is the worst team in the ACC, and they are rivaling 2010-11 Wake Forest as the worst team in ACC history. They have losses to Holy Cross, UMass, Saint Louis, New Mexico, Penn State, Boston U, Providence, Harvard and Rhode Island, and their computer numbers are as bad as it gets for a power conference team. The Eagles are breaking in almost an entirely new roster from last season, and they don?t resemble the team that upset the Hokies last season, just a game after Tech beat Duke.

The game between Wake and Boston College, at home against Florida State, is interesting. The Noles were expected to make the NCAA Tournament again this year, but they are off to a very disappointing start, with losses to Harvard and Princeton. FSU should probably get away from scheduling the Ivy League for awhile.

That said, the Noles are still a talented team. They have a lot of height, and they play good defense, but they are offensively challenged. That makes them about the same as every other Florida State team under Leonard Hamilton.

Here's a look at the current ACC standings, based on RPI rank.

ACC Standings
Team Record RPI
Duke 12-2 2
UNC 13-2 18
Virginia Tech 11-3 39
Virginia 13-1 52
NC State 11-4 53
FSU 9-5 66
Miami 9-4 75
Maryland 10-3 110
Wake Forest 9-5 111
Georgia Tech 7-7 156
Clemson 7-7 234
BC 5-9 262

Virginia Tech has played a good non-conference schedule, and as a result they have the third best RPI of all the ACC schools. Right now, it's fair to say that Duke and UNC are NCAA Tournament locks, while Virginia Tech, Virginia and NC State are the next three in line.

Florida State and Miami are not out of it, because they've played a tough enough schedule to keep their RPI in the ballpark. However, they are going to have to go on big winning streaks.

As far as Virginia Tech goes, they've got a chance for a decent road win tomorrow, and then they can beat a team who might end up in the top 50 in the following game. Their objective when they go to Chestnut Hill next weekend is simply to avoid what would be an embarrassing loss.

TURNER LEADS BOWIE STATE TO ITS FIRST WIN

?

?

(BOWIE, Md. ? January 5, 2012) Juliette Turner led all players with career-highs of 25 points and 18 rebounds as Bowie State University opened its CIAA season with a 69-49 victory over Fayetteville State University.

?

The win is the first this season for the Lady Bulldogs (1-8, 1-0) while the Lady Broncos (6-4, 0-1) dropped back-to-back games for the first time this season.

?

When first year head coach Renard was asked what made the difference tonight, he simply responded, ?They wanted it ? Every last one of them wanted to win at home!?

?

Kimberly Jones added 16 points, tying her career-high while Brooke Miles chipped in 12 for the Lady Bulldogs.

?

Je?Lena Robertson led Fayetteville State with nine points while Akysia Resper and SheQuitia Manning had eight apiece. Manning led the Lady Broncos with 12 rebounds.

?

The Lady Broncos struggled mightily in their first game in 17 days, showing considerable rust while being foul prone in the first half. Fayetteville State made just one of its first 12 field goal attempts, and finished the half shooting just 24 percent from the field.

?

Turner had a lot to do with Bowie State?s quick start, scoring her team?s first 10 points and 14 of its first 18. She had a double-double by the break, with 15 points and 11 rebounds, leading the previously winless Lady Bulldogs to a 30-19 lead at the half.

?

Bowie State continued to pour it on after the break, scoring 10 of the first 12 points of the period to stretch out a 20-6 scoring run that spanned halftime. That gave the Lady Bulldogs their largest lead to that point, 40-21, with 16:50 left in the game.

?

The Lady Bulldogs will hit the road for a week long southern swing to Winston-Salem State University (January 9th), Shaw University (January 12th) and Saint Augustine?s College (January 14th).? Bowie State returns home Monday, January 16th, hosting Livingstone College at 5:30 pm in the A.C. Jordan Arena.

15th-RANKED BULLDOGS ROLL TO 97-85 VICTORY OVER FAYETTEVILLE STATE

?

?

(BOWIE, Md. ? January 5, 2012) The 15th ranked Bulldogs of Bowie State University had a tough first half, but pulled away in the final period and rolled to a 97-85 win over the Fayetteville State University.

?

Fayetteville State gave Bowie State all they could handle for a half.? But a brilliant 6-minute stretch spanning the halftime break was enough for the Bulldogs to prevail 97-85 in the CIAA opener for both teams on Thursday night.

?

In a matchup of the CIAA?s top two scoring teams, Bowie State was able to overcome a sterling shooting performance by Fayetteville State?s Jarmel Baxter.? Baxter finished with a game-high 18 points, setting a new career-high for 3-point field goals made in a single game with six.

?

Paced by Baxter?s four triples and 12 points, Fayetteville State (2-6, 0-1 CIAA) trailed just 45-42 at the half. The teams traded the lead several times, with the Broncos recovering from an early seven-point deficit to take a 40-36 edge with 2:41 to go in the half after Tyrrel Tate?s jumper.

?

But Bowie State (9-1, 1-0 CIAA) was only getting started.

?

The game was tied entering the final seconds of the half before senior Jay Gavin buried a deep 3-pointer as the shot clock was winding down to give Bowie State the 3-point advantage, closing the first half on a 9-2 spurt.

?

Gavin added another 3 in the opening minute of the second period while senior Darren Clark put together a three-point play, stretching the Bulldogs? run to 14-2 and the lead to 51-42 just 67 seconds into the half.

?

In all, the Bulldogs scored 14 unanswered points to open the period, stretching the scoring run to 23-2 for a 59-42 lead just over three minutes into the second half.

?

Fayetteville State managed to recover midway through the period, and on Baxter?s sixth 3-ponter, the Broncos trailed 79-67 with 7:59 remaining. But the Bulldogs, who shot 53 percent from the field for the game, quickly pushed the lead back to 16 to regain control.

?

?A string of second half stops in the second half really helped us pull away?, said third year coach Darrell Brooks.? ?When asked about the Bulldogs balance this season, Brooks responded, ?We do everything by committee and hopefully that will be the strength for us this year ? We have the depth, especially inside.?

?

Gavin and senior Travis Hyman led five Bowie State players in double figures with 16 points apiece. Sophomore Julian Williams and junior Byron Westmorland added 12 points each while junior Dameatric Scott chipped in 11.

?

Tim Plummer added 15 points and seven rebounds for the Broncos while Tate chipped in 13 points and a game-high three steals.

?

Bowie State will take their six-game winning streak on the road, making stops at Winston-Salem State (January 9th), Shaw (January 12th) and Saint Augustine?s (January 14th).? The Bulldogs? next home contest will take place Monday, January 16th versus Livingstone College.? Game time is set for 7:30 pm in BSU?s A.C. Jordan Arena.

DomRep auctions accused druglord's luxury watches (AP)

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic ? Authorities in the Dominican Republic on Thursday auctioned off 27 luxury watches that once belonged to an alleged drug boss known as the "Pablo Escobar of the Caribbean."

Each watch was sold for less than half its market value for a total of roughly $600,000, said Julio Cesar Suffront, financial investigations director for the National Drug Control Agency.

The watches were taken to experts in Miami and valued at between $5,000 and $85,000 each, he said.

They were the first items seized from Jose David Figueroa Agosto to be auctioned. The accused druglord also owned 20 properties and 10 luxury cars, including a special edition Camaro that runs on jet fuel and cost more than $75,000.

The money made from the auctions will be distributed to several government agencies and drug rehabilitation centers in the Dominican Republic.

Agosto was arrested in Puerto Rico in July 2010 after a nearly 10-year manhunt following his escape in 1999 from a prison in the U.S. Caribbean territory.

He is accused of shipping Colombian cocaine to the U.S. mainland through Puerto Rico. He also faces several murder charges in the Dominican Republic.

Agosto has been compared with Escobar, a notorious cocaine kingpin from Colombia who was killed in 1993.

Santorum braces to move beyond Iowa (AP)

DES MOINES, Iowa ? Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum is courting young voters as he seeks to surprise his rivals with a strong showing in the state's leadoff precinct caucuses.

Santorum was set to join a couple of other candidates at a Rock the Vote event in suburban Des Moines on Tuesday, one of a series of events looking to get high school students involved in the presidential campaign.

The event is being sponsored in part by Iowa Secretary of State Matt Schultz, who has endorsed Santorum and has been traveling with him. Schultz called Santorum the most consistent conservative in the field, a point Santorum hammers on the campaign trail.

Heading into Tuesday night's caucuses, Santorum sounded increasingly confident and vowed to be in the race past the first votes of the 2012 presidential campaign.

"I feel very good about where I am," he said. "We're going up. I feel very good about New Hampshire. They like this kind of politics too."

"We're going to do very well tonight," Santorum said in an appearance Tuesday on ABC's "Good Morning America."

"Ten days ago we were in last place in the polls and people asked me why I didn't get out," he said. Santorum said voters in Iowa are "looking for the candidate they can trust, and that's why we're moving up in the polls."

He acknowledged fundraising problems but said that a strong showing in Iowa should help significantly on that front. So far, Santorum said, "I'd say we've done this on shoestrings, but that would be insulting shoestrings."

Santorum said he's ready to move on aggressively to New Hampshire, South Carolina and other early voting states, saying "the biggest issue in this campaign is going to be the size and scale of government and the biggest signature issue is health care."

Closing his campaign in Iowa Monday, Santorum returned to his major themes.

"I'm asking you not to settle for someone who might be able to win the election, but it might be a pyrrhic victory," he said. "We are not looking for executive experience, we are looking for a commander in chief."

His campaign events were increasingly jammed as the campaign peaked. In suburban Des Moines, he had to give two speeches because all his backers couldn't fit into a single room.

"I've not seen crowds like this," he said.

While the impending birth of Beyoncé's baby kept everyone on the edge of their seats over the holidays, the singer and her hubby, Jay-Z, were spotted dining and celebrating the new year over the weekend. And for those wondering, Beyoncé was still very much pregnant, despite rumors she had given birth.

Jay and Bey were seen at Brooklyn restaurant du jour Buttermilk Channel on New Year's Eve, eating fried chicken and oysters, according to People.com. A source tells the website that despite being very pregnant, Beyoncé was also very glamorous. "She looked amazing. She wore sky-high heels. It was really impressive for an enormously pregnant woman," the source said. "She looked like she was about to give birth."

The pair reportedly later went to hang out at Beyoncé's sister Solange's apartment for a New Year's Eve shindig. Before they hit up the bash, the couple shared what may be one of their last nights pre-parenthood. "She was definitely a pregnant lady that night," the source said. "They sat side by side and had a cozy and intimate dinner. They seemed to be having a lovely time."

That same night, "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve 2012" host Ryan Seacrest introduced a pre-taped performance by the star, saying, "Obviously, Beyoncé couldn't be here tonight because she's about to give birth to her first child."

Several days into the new year, Beyoncé's baby is one of the many celebrity births to look forward to in 2012. Other big pop singer moms-to-be include Hilary Duff and Jessica Simpson.

(AP) ? Firefighters in Chile battled three huge wildfires Monday that have burned about 90 square miles (23,000 hectares) of forest, destroyed more than 100 homes and have driven away thousands of tourists while causing millions of dollars in losses.

The fires also claimed their first victim: an elderly man who refused warnings to leave his home.

Chile's normally rainy southern regions are suffering from a nationwide heat wave, on top of a drought that makes fires increasingly likely. The country was battling 48 separate fires on Sunday alone, and red alerts were declared for the regions of Magallanes, Bio Bio and Maule.

"We have a situation of extreme vulnerability," said President Sebastian Pinera, who called for toughening sentences for arson.

In the Bio Bio region, the timber industry is threatened by a fire that destroyed an Arauco company mill. Shares in Arauco's parent company, Copec SA, dropped nearly 4 percent before recovering in Monday trading. One of the Bio Bio fires also killed a 75-year-old man who refused to evacuate. Hundreds of others who did leave their homes were forced to relocate yet again early Monday as the flames advanced.

In Magallanes, more than 7 percent of the famed Torres del Paine national park had burned, ruining vacations for some of the 150,000 tourists who come each year, mostly during the brief southern summer. Strong winds grounded helicopters and planes for long periods, leaving the fight to more than 750 firefighters on the ground, who have contained four of six areas where the fire spread. Authorities hoped to reopen the northern section of the park to tourists later in the week.

An Israeli tourist, Rotem Singer, 23, has denied a charge of negligently starting the Torres del Paine fire, but prosecutor Ivan Vidal said Singer's traveling companions said he set fire to toilet paper after going to the bathroom, and then failed to put it out completely. If convicted, he faces up to two months in jail.
