Those of you who remember our little discussion here recently of grasspea breeding, and in particular the importance (or otherwise) of breeding for low values of the neurotoxin ?-N-oxalyl-L-?,?-diaminopropionic acid (?-ODAP) in its seeds, will not be surprised to learn that a press release a few days ago announcing a new(ish) promising low-ODAP variety called Ceora sent me scurrying around in Genebank Database Hell.
Grass pea is a hardy annual legume with a growth habit similar to field pea, characterised by resistance to both drought and waterlogging. Its low cost, low input nature makes it a prime feed crop.
It has been restricted in use, however, due to the presence of neurotoxin ODAP, which causes paralysis of the lower limbs (lathyrism).
This was overcome by the breeding of cultivar Ceora (Lathyrus sativus) by Dr Colin Hanbury, Prof Kadambot Siddique and Dr Ashutosh Sarker of the Centre for Legumes in Mediterranean Agriculture (CLIMA).
With an ODAP level of 0.04 to 0.09 percent, Ceora virtually eliminates the toxin?s effects, making it safe for animal consumption.

Those benefits are a suite of adaptations to cope with, and indeed also avoid, water deficits. Promising indeed. But how was this miracle plant concocted?
Ok, so googling pretty quickly revealed that Ceora, which incidentally ?is the first grass pea (Lathyrus sativus) cultivar to be bred and released in Australia? ?
?was derived from a cross made in 1994 at Northam, Western Australia (WA), using female parent K33 (originating from Pakistan) x male parent 8604 (originating from Bangladesh).
That?s from its official registration note. So all we now have to do is trace K33 and 8604. And that?s where I hit a wall. Because apart from finding that 8604 was also subsequently called ATC 80723 (see page 425 here), I could make no further headway. Sure, 8604 might be this accession in GRIN. But then again it might not be. And of a K33 (in its various permutations) from Pakistan I could find no mention in any database. There?s a grasspea labelled K33 cv Zubryak from Russia in VIR?s database, but that?s coincidence, surely.
So I was reluctantly forced, and not for the first time, to enlist the help of a Virgil, in this case Dirk Enneking, who has commented here frequently on grasspea and other pulse breeding issues. To cut a long story short, he used his global network of grasspea contacts to discover (or re-discover, as he also found some of this stuff buried in his old notes), that 8604 is a breeding line developed by crossing the Indian line Pusa-24 (as male) with the Bangladeshi landrace ?Jamalpur local? (female). Both P-24 (as it is also known) and Jamalpur local have a history of use in grasspea improvement. The former in particular is known for its low ODAP content. As for, K33 its origin seems to lie with Pakistani researcher Hafeez I.T. Khawajas, but little is know beyond that.
Anyway, all this is of any conceivable interest to anyone only if they can get hold of the germplasm. Ceora is of course commercially available, although a reference sample is also stored in the USDA system. So too is P-24, although it is presumably also in the Indian genebank at NBPGR (and perhaps ICARDA, though I couldn?t find it on Genesys). Hopefully all this stuff is at Horsham, but I cannot be sure because they, like NBPGR, are not online. For now.
P.S. And here?s a final thought. This took a couple of weeks and endless emails to unravel. The much more complicated Wita 9 pedigree story just a few clicks. Once we get genebank databases sorted out, we?ll have to link them to breeders? databases. Once.

The event will be held at prestigious and luxury Sofitel Hotel Los Angeles located at 8555 Beverly Boulevard in Beverly Hills, CA 90048 on Friday, February 24, 2012, from 11:30 am to 3:00 pm. The event will feature live entertainment performance by Recording Artist Izzy Chait and Band, a red carpet, scholarship and civic awards presentation, lunch and official gift bags.
As a part of the annual afternoon affair, awards are presented annually, to filmmakers selected for their creative achievements, vision and technical talent, and in addition to financial awards toward their tuition, film companies traditionally arrange gifts of technical support for scholarship recipients.
A dual purpose in recognizing these outstanding individuals is the ability to benefit the Multicultural Motion Picture Association?s Educational and Development Scholarship Fund. WASHINGTON, DC February 15, 2012 ? Today Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Henry A. Waxman and Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade Subcommittee Ranking Member G. K. Butterfield sent a letter to Apple CEO Tim Cook regarding recent reports that the social networking app "Path" accessed and collected address book information from consumers without asking for consent. There have been claims that the practice of collecting consumers' address book contacts without their permission is common and accepted among iOS app developers. This raises questions of whether Apple's iOS app developer policies and practices adequately protect consumer privacy.

Last week, independent iOS app developer Arun Thampi blogged about his discovery that the social networking app "Path" was accessing and collecting the contents of his iPhone address book without ever having asked for his consent.[1] The information taken without his permission ? or that of the individual contacts who own that information ? included full names, phone numbers, and email addresses.[2] Following media coverage of Mr. Thampi's discovery, Path's Co-Founder and CEO Dave Morin quickly apologized, promised to delete from Path's servers all data it had taken from its users' address books, and announced the release of a new version of Path that would prompt users to opt in to sharing their address book contacts.[3]
This incident raises questions about whether Apple's iOS app developer policies and practices may fall short when it comes to protecting the information of iPhone users and their contacts.
The data management section of your iOS developer website states: "iOS has a comprehensive collection of tools and frameworks for storing, accessing, and sharing data. . . . iOS apps even have access to a device's global data such as contacts in the Address Book, and photos in the Photo Library."[4] The app store review guidelines section states: "We review every app on the App Store based on a set of technical, content, and design criteria. This review criteria is now available to you in the App Store Review Guidelines."[5] This same section indicates that the guidelines are available only to registered members of the iOS Developer Program.[6] However, tech blogs following the Path controversy indicate that the iOS App Guidelines require apps to get a user's permission before "transmit[ting] data about a user".[7]
In spite of this guidance, claims have been made that "there's a quiet understanding among many iOS app developers that it is acceptable to send a user's entire address book, without their permission, to remote servers and then store it for future reference. It's common practice, and many companies likely have your address book stored in their database."[8] One blogger claims to have conducted a survey of developers of popular iOS apps and found that 13 of 15 had a "contacts database with millions of records" ? with one claiming to have a database containing "Mark Zuckerberg's cell phone number, Larry Ellison's home phone number and Bill Gates' cell phone number."[9]
The fact that the previous version of Path was able to gain approval for distribution through the Apple iTunes Store despite taking the contents of users' address books without their permission suggests that there could be some truth to these claims. To more fully understand and assess these claims, we are requesting that you respond to the following questions:
(1) Please describe all iOS App Guidelines that concern criteria related to the privacy and security of data that will be accessed or transmitted by an app.
(2) Please describe how you determine whether an app meets those criteria.
(3) What data do you consider to be "data about a user" that is subject to the requirement that the app obtain the user's consent before it is transmitted?
(4) To the extent not addressed in the response to question 2, please describe how you determine whether an app will transmit "data about a user" and whether the consent requirement has been met.
(5) How many iOS apps in the U.S. iTunes Store transmit "data about a user"?
(6) Do you consider the contents of the address book to be "data about a user"?
(7) Do you consider the contents of the address book to be data of the contact? If not, please explain why not. Please explain how you protect the privacy and security interests of that contact in his or her information.
(8) How many iOS apps in the U.S. iTunes Store transmit information from the address book? How many of those ask for the user's consent before transmitting their contacts' information?
(9) You have built into your devices the ability to turn off in one place the transmission of location information entirely or on an app-by-app basis. Please explain why you have not done the same for address book information.

The difference between a subscribing employer and a non-subscribing employer is significant. Nonsubscribing employers are subject to a lawsuit claiming negligence for a workplace injury or death. Subscribing employers are not. The Texas Workers Compensation Act provides:
Sec. 408.001. EXCLUSIVE REMEDY; EXEMPLARY DAMAGES.
(a) Recovery of workers? compensation benefits is the exclusive remedy of an employee covered by workers? compensation insurance coverage or a legal beneficiary against the employer or an agent or employee of the employer for the death of or a work-related injury sustained by the employee.
(b) This section does not prohibit the recovery of exemplary damages by the surviving spouse or heirs of the body of a deceased employee whose death was caused by an intentional act or omission of the employer or by the employer?s gross negligence.
In short, if the employer is a subscriber, workers? compensation benefits is the exclusive remedy against the employer, unless the employee dies as a result of an intentional act or omission of the employer or by the employer?s gross negligence.
For nonsubscribers it is completely different. The employee can file suit against the employer claiming negligence and the employer loses some of its defenses:
Sec. 406.033. COMMON-LAW DEFENSES; BURDEN OF PROOF.
(a) In an action against an employer who does not have workers? compensation insurance coverage to recover damages for personal injuries or death sustained by an employee in the course and scope of the employment, it is not a defense that:
(1) the employee was guilty of contributory negligence;
(2) the employee assumed the risk of injury or death; or
(3) the injury or death was caused by the negligence of a fellow employee.
(b) This section does not reinstate or otherwise affect the availability of defenses at common law, including the defenses described by Subsection (a).
(c) The employer may defend the action on the ground that the injury was caused:
(1) by an act of the employee intended to bring about the injury; or
(2) while the employee was in a state of intoxication.
(d) In an action described by Subsection (a) against an employer who does not have workers? compensation insurance coverage, the plaintiff must prove negligence of the employer or of an agent or servant of the employer acting within the general scope of the agent?s or servant?s employment.

(a) An employee or legal beneficiary may seek damages from a third-party who is or becomes liable to pay damages for an injury or death that is compensable under this subtitle and may also pursue a claim for workers? compensation benefits under this subtitle.
(b) If a benefit is claimed by an injured employee or a legal beneficiary of the employee, the insurance carrier is subrogated to the rights of the injured employee and may enforce the liability of the third-party in the name of the injured employee or the legal beneficiary.
Section (b) deals with subrogation which may allow the insurance carrier to recover all or some of the benefits it has paid out of any third-party settlement or judgment.

DURHAM, N.H. Teen victims of dating violence are overwhelmingly more likely to have been victims of other forms of violence, such as sexual violence and child abuse, according to new research from the University of New Hampshire Crimes Against Children Research Center.
Researchers were surprised to discover that every teen victim of dating violence surveyed as part of a national sample of 1,680 youth ages 12 to 17 reported that this wasn't the first time that they had been victimized. Although teen dating violence is often thought of as a stand-alone phenomenon, the new research shows that teen dating violence is more typically part of a pattern of multiple victimizations.
"We were genuinely surprised how interconnected teen dating violence turned out to be with other forms of victimization. We thought there would be overlap but had no idea that all dating violence victims are dealing with other forms of violence and abuse as well," said UNH Crimes against Children Research Center research associate Sherry Hamby, lead author of the study and research associate professor at Sewanee, the University of the South.
The new research is published online in the article "Teen Dating Violence: Co-Occurrence With Other Victimizations in the National Survey of Children's Exposure to Violence" by the American Psychological Association in a special issue of the journal Psychology of Violence. February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month.
Sexual violence and child abuse were the most common other victimizations among teen dating violence victims. A distressingly high percentage 60 percent also had experienced at least one type of sexual victimization, with the most common types being verbally sexually harassed (30 percent), flashed by a peer (25 percent), and sexually assaulted (20 percent).
The researchers also found that most of the time, the other victimizations were not at the hands of violent dating partners. More than half of teen dating violence victims had a history of some form of child abuse, with more than 40 percent of victims physically abused by a caregiver, and nearly 70 percent having witnessed violence in their families.
Cyberbullying also was linked to teen dating violence. Youth who had been cyberbullied were three to four times more likely to be teen dating violence victims than other youth.
"We know that some youth are just generally more at risk for everything than other youth," Hamby said. "If they live in a violent family or violent neighborhood, they may not be able to avoid violence or know how to. If they've been hurt in the past, it may lower their self-esteem or impair their ability to protect themselves. In particular, we need to help kids from violent families, kids who have been bullied or kids who have been sexually abused from getting involved or staying in an assaultive relationship."

The study was conducted in 2008 and involved interviews a nationally representative sample of 1,680 youth ages 12 to 17. In addition to Hamby, the researchers include David Finkelhor, director of the UNH Crimes against Children Research Center and professor of sociology, and Heather Turner, professor of sociology at UNH.

A distressingly high percentage 60 percent also had experienced at least one type of sexual victimization, with the most common types being verbally sexually harassed (30 percent), flashed by a peer (25 percent), and sexually assaulted (20 percent).
The researchers also found that most of the time, the other victimizations were not at the hands of violent dating partners. More than half of teen dating violence victims had a history of some form of child abuse, with more than 40 percent of victims physically abused by a caregiver, and nearly 70 percent having witnessed violence in their families.
Cyberbullying also was linked to teen dating violence. Youth who had been cyberbullied were three to four times more likely to be teen dating violence victims than other youth.
"We know that some youth are just generally more at risk for everything than other youth," Hamby said. "If they live in a violent family or violent neighborhood, they may not be able to avoid violence or know how to. If they've been hurt in the past, it may lower their self-esteem or impair their ability to protect themselves. In particular, we need to help kids from violent families, kids who have been bullied or kids who have been sexually abused from getting involved or staying in an assaultive relationship."

The study was conducted in 2008 and involved interviews a nationally representative sample of 1,680 youth ages 12 to 17. In addition to Hamby, the researchers include David Finkelhor, director of the UNH Crimes against Children Research Center and professor of sociology, and Heather Turner, professor of sociology at UNH.

It?s an amazing ingredient that comes from the Amazon forests, a place known for a long time to have the purest natural plants on earth. Babassu oil comes from a fruit, as well. This fruit is found on the Babassu palm tree. Legend has it that its use as a beauty treatment by the natives of that region goes back centuries.
